I’ve bought a mini lathe recently and some tooling for it. Part of this (a z slide) is shipping from India. It cost £90 this is fine, I’ve received an invoice from FedEx for an estimated tax bill of 18.59 seems reasonable (if slightly disappointing!)
However to pay this tax bill I have to pay a handling fee of £12 to FedEx. Is this avoidable? Can I not just pay the tax myself directly?

No, fedex have your stuff, you can't avoid paying them.

I paid a £9 handling fee on a £3 duty / tax through the post office once. Nearly told them to stick it.

Yep - 2x keyboards here and oddly they were identical keyboards but one had £8 odd duty and the other only £6. Both attracted FedEx's £12 though. Thing is they do incur costs etc by releasing the goods to you etc so at least some of the charge is justifiable. Whether they make a bit is irrelevant really.

I was going to kick up a fuss but then just couldn't be arsed as it would have made no difference.
