Hi,
I have an iMac thats about 5 years old, spec is
3.06 GHz intel Core i3
4GB 1333 MHz RAM
and its currently running 10.8.5.
Its not performing as well as it used to, there is loads of stuff on it i don't use any more and a clean install of the OS is what is usually suggested to solve the issues im experiencing .
Trouble is i can't find the disks that came with the machine so i would need to load the latest one from app store (10.11.2) but i don't think you can do a clean install that way? It would just do it as an update.
Any suggestions how i can do it.
will my 3.06 GHz intel Core i3 take El Capitan or am i best leaving it running Mountain Lion?
Thanks
You create a boot USB pen with the latest os. Give it a Google
Look on YouTube. I did this when I replaced the HDD. You create an install file you put on a USB stick and you can use that to perform the clean install. It's easy.
Clean OS install is a bit of a myth IMHO. My 2009 Mini runs fine and it has never had a clean install.
You should upgrade the OS (my Mini is bang up to date) althogh if you are insistent on a fresh install you should perhaps wait. You can download the os from the apple website, you don't need the disks.
I would say first step is to delete unused files (another stw-er had a theead a week ago on similar) - you said younhad lots of unused files/programmes
How full is your hard drive ?
Download blackmagicspeedtest and tell us how fast is the read/write
If you want the machine to run better you should consider a harddrive upgrade and 8GB RAM. With £100-200 spent it will run like a new machine. I spent £120 on my Mini (8gb ram and 750gb drive) and am about to upgrade a friends 2008 Mac Book Pro for £100 (2gb -> 4gb RAM and a new 500 faster hard drive)
Read this thread and try and clean up the hard drive of unused files. Put stuff on the cloud, buy an external drive or replace the internal drive
