Nothing works any more. He cannot stand, he cries when I try to help him up, and there is nothing left on his back legs. I'm going to sleep downstairs with him tonight, and then call the vet out tomorrow.

Broken-hearted. I don't think I'd have beaten cancer to this point without him. The most loyal friend ever. Tonight I carried him outside to look at the night sky one last time, like we used to do.

Oh mate. Honestly you are going to do a good thing and despite how awful you may feel its the right thing for your friend. I still miss my lad having done the same but it's the final act of love and friendship for him.

Dude, gutted for you. I was so lucky that my childhood hound pretty much just kealed over from healthy. Sound like he had good innings, still horrible though. They leave such a massive gap. thoughts with you.

I can't say anything to make this hurt any less for you but I really wish I could. Sounds like you're making a selfless but difficult decision though.

Both me and the wife are sat here now, welling up and giving some extra fuss to our pooch.

I had to get our first dog put down two years ago and our cat eight years ago. It is one of the worst things you have to do, but it is the last thing you can do for them.

We have two great dogs now, it is much easier when you get another dog.

Hope you get through tomorrow alright.

Innes

You know when it's time, very tough though

Take him out to see the dawn tomorrow also. He sounds like he's had a good time, he's helped his master and you are with him at the end. IME that's pretty much all they want.

Just walked in from making a cuppa to find my wife with tears in her eyes. She said "don't read the thread on STW, you'll know which one" 🙁

Really really feel for you, it sounds like you are doing the right thing for your dog though so take some comfort from that.

Tomorrow will be a shitty day, just get through it.
The fact you care enough to stay with him tonight shows he´s had a good run with good people, take comfort in that.

You loved him, so he lived.
Bet he had great time with you.
Pity they don't live as long as us.
It's great he has you to help him on his final day.
Thinking of you.

Yes, take comfort in the knowledge that he was a very lucky dog, with years and years of kind ownership and loyalty at your hands.
Millions of dogs don't get it as good.
He's been a happy dog and will remember you so in doggy heaven.

He was there for you when you needed him, He needs you now, he's got nothing left to give. It is the last gift you can give him, an end to the pain. He'll thank you for it. And you'll feel better for helping him. Thanks him for the good times.
I feel your pain - it's not about you right now it's all about him AND you.

Be strong, as he was strong for you, through good times and bad a question never asked eyes sparkling in the sun a tail wagging each time he'd be offered a run..............

Man doesn't that dust just get everywhere!

We had 3 springers. 2 we had before the kids were born. They were absolutely part of the family, 100%. And we had one put to sleep 10 days ago - it was beyond awful. But, we actively talk about her, always about the 100's of good times, her character, her daftness. It's still grim, but we're smiling and fondly remembering. We know it was the 'right' thing to do, but it's so tough. Keep in mind all the happiness between you - it's helped us.
