Bored and realised I hadn't done anything remotely astro in ages. Also annoyed at myself for not getting the motivation to at least get my imaging rig working again and have missed at least one decent night and looking at tonight, probably two.

So, grabbed my lowly Sony RX10M4 and decided to do a moon shot. Handheld and aligned and stacked in nothing more than Affinity Photo and then into DxO PhotoLabs for final tweaks.

Really need to get my full astro imaging kit going again though...

Beautiful photo. Is it just me or does anyone else look at that and think Terry's chocolate orange?

Anyone going to mention the roads fanning out from the two big cities (centre bottom & mid left) up there?

Cracking shot. How did you get so close to it?

As always, very very nice.

It was you that took those pics of some proper deep space stuff wasnt it?

I'd never even heard of the methods you used to get those before you made the thread. One of those "wow" moments.

Lovely. Do you have a tracking gimbal thingy so you can do super long exposures without streaking stars etc? Always fancied a bash a t that hit my partner claims I have too many expensive hobbies already - as if!

Yes you do! But that's a cracker from a "lowly" camera. 👍

It was either this or Terry's chocolate orange...I had to go with Terry's as its Xmas WCA.
I'd love to know how you take photos like that though. Always amazes me the level of detail.

Thanks all. As to the method this one was pretty simple; as the moon is bright you can just hold the camera, even at long focal lengths so no tripod etc needed for this one. This was took at 600mm (35mm equiv) and I bracketed 5 exposures per burst in +/- 1/3 ev stops.

I took a few bursts and the used DxO PhotoLabs 5 (similar to Lightroom but imo better and you can actually buy the software) to first analyse and delete any poor frames and then do some light processing (noise removal etc).

The I used Affinity Photo to do and HDR stack and it automatically aligned and rotated each frame and did the magic.

Then back into DxO for final tweaks included its rather brilliant ClearImage feature. All in took me 5 minutes or so.

Now, if I am doing the deep sky stuff - yes I have a full and very expensive tracking mount that is computer controlled together with dedicated astrophotography cameras and stuff. That is somewhat more complex and I am not yet very good at it 🙂

That's great.

You've got me looking at the geology of the Moon now.

Nice Pic!!

I keep meaning to try this little project to take some pictures of things a long way away....

Just not sure how much use it will get, once it's been built & I've tried it a few times.

Moon Base Alpha? Didn't you see the documentaries about it? They were on years ago.

Nice shot

here's one I captured a while back in daytime - several years back I was lucky enough to pick up a Russian MTO 3M-5A 500mm f8.0 mirror lens for just a few quid. with some m42 to Pentax adaptors I can use this with my Pentax K3 and it can deliver some great results...

@stumpy01 - that looks very interesting. Will investigate that further.

@unclezaskar - that is a really nice image.

I have had another go at processing my data and have teased some more detail out of it.

As a photo, I prefer the first one. This second version is so detailed it'd probably be scientifically useful though!

@tthew - I agree. I just love playing around with the data to see what I can squeeze out of it. So many different processes you can apply when working with astro images you can come up with very different versions 🙂

This is one I took a while ago. Just love the moon - can spend hours looking at it. Would highly recommend a good lunar obs session even with just binoculars but even with a modest telescope you can get some incredible views.
