Like in Knight Rider - If your car's in a truck travelling at (say) 50mph, and you reverse out of the truck but stick the car in neutral before it hits the road so you're just coasting, which way would the car go when it hit the road?

Would it go in the opposite direction to the truck as that's the direction it's moving in relation to the truck or would it go in the same direction as the truck?

Depends how fast you reverse.....and where your speed is measured relative to.

Assuming it's measured relative to the truck,

<50mph you'll go forwards (edit - same direction as the truck)
exactly 50mph you'll be stationary (impossible in reality)
>50mph you'll go backwards. (edit - opposite direction to the truck)

Ask Elon Musk

Or

Same direction as the truck at a speed less than 50

Mythbuters did this year's ago.

The car assumes the speed of the truck when coming off the ramp. When going in it assumes the speed of the truck too so it looks really cool but is basic physics. Sure there's a video on YouTube of it somewhere.

Edit: Martin hutch got it before me!

Say the backwards rolling is at 3mph, then it will be moving forwards at 47mph when it hits the road. In fact, as soon as the back wheels hit the road, then the difference is reduced.

So it would go the same direction as the truck, at very slightly less velocity (and deccelerating).

5 mins onwards for leaving the truck.

Simpler with a ball

for maximum effect leave it in gear when you hit the tarmac.

pistons through the bonnet or cogs through the casing .... one or the other.

Is the lorry (it's NOT a 'truck') on an aircraft carrier?

I'm not certain. I'm going to check the Italian Job again. I think the main thing is not to try this on alpine hairpins.
