Three hours 47 minutes long!

Absolutely eviscerates "Star Trek: Picard".

I waded through the first season and hated it, but she goes into so much detail, it's cathartic. And it's far more fun to watch.

I'm about halfway through, just another 90 minutes to go.

If you're not into STNG then really don't bother watching it.

The fun thing about time travel stories is that they're boring and they suck"

I didn't mind the first 7 episodes of the first season but the end was terrible and the second season was awful.  Still, I thought it was better than STD(iscovery).

THREE HOURS FORTY SEVEN?

Why not just watch the series, will take less effort.

My summary

Series 1: Bit boring. Androidy stuff.

Series 2: Still quite boring. Star Trek 4 without the whales or the fun.

Series 3: Good fun, decent fan service, gets the band back together etc.

I watched the first season, thought it was tolerable. S2 sucked. I heard S3 was better but I have other things to do.

I dragged myself through Picard S1. I hated it. Now I know why.

The review is great. I feel inspired to go back and re-watch Voyager and STNG.

When I watched Picard originally, I just hated the doddery old man who had replaced Picard, the annoying Elrond character who ran around emoting, all the ridiculous psycho-babble nonsense about synths future prediction, the whole thing. It just wasn't any fun. Just dreary.

My advice would be to go directly to season 3. You don't need any detail from the first 2 seasons.

After struggling thru the first two series, I decided not to bother, is it really worth it?

As for that utter pish that is 'Discovery', totally put me off even trying 'Strange new worlds'

--- yeah I'm not watch the OP 's video, I already wasted enough time on Picard

+1

I know what was wrong with it - it was boring and the writing was terrible.

Re-watched the first series of TNG on Netflix earlier this year and it was amazing though.

I made it through the first season, I liked some of it but the overall AI plot felt too much like fairly dull takes on the whole subject that I'd seen before, and half of the second season before I lost the will to continue. I think I'd probably enjoy the third season, but the completionist in me would want to watch the rest of the second season first and I'm not sure I'd manage to do that.

Strange New Worlds is well worth watching. It feels different from the other recent ST shows, it certainly is more fun to watch. And for me Ethan Peck is proving to be the best Spock.

Picard S2 was terrible. S3 was a buge improvement as it was essentially pleasing all the fans by bringing the gang back together.

I gave up on Discovery during S4 (I think). It just got so self important and the future timeline plot was just boring.

I thought Picard was perfectly fine. But then, I didn’t go into it expecting TNG series 8 which most of the ‘fandom’ seemed to. The main character being a doddery old guy is also perfectly fine. Because he is. The forty-something captain is long gone, both in universe and in the real world.

@z1ppy I also hated discovery and Picard S1 and 2 but had a heads up from a fellow Star Trek fan that 3 was good and I certainly enjoyed it. Nothing new really but a fun reminiscence. Strange new worlds was also much better than Discovery which had me thinking my Trekie days were over. TNG still my all time favourite though.

That popped up in my YT feed but I gave it a swerve, like I do now with a lot of Sci-Fi complaint content now...

I'm a fan of Trek, Especially the TNG era shows. and yes some of the recent relaunches/re-treads/retcons have been variable in terms of quality, or just trying to do "Fan service" without much effort expended on plots or scripts, but I'm not sure it's healthy to spend half a day watching long-winded complaint videos on top of burning screen time watching the shows themselves. It's probably even less healthy to be making such content (discuss).

I could go out for a 4 hour ride instead, that feels like a better use of my time...

Season 3 far better than the others, especially 2. All seasons standalone iirc.

SNW is MUCH better than Discovery IMO. Bit like original trek, doesn't take itself too seriously (the musical episode!), the cast is great, really looking forward to the next series.

Thought Disco series 1 and 2 were OK, but just got bored when they did the time-jump stuff and didn't make it to the end of that season.

The top three Nu Star Trek:

#3. Picard S3.

#2. Strange New Worlds.

#1. Lower Decks.

Lower decks is ace. And then you have the live action crossover with SNW...

Deep space 9 was great. Also like Lower Decks, but that's a parody, so not really star trek IMO.

Enterprise was pretty rubbish IMO.

Only saw the first couple of episodes of Picard and couldn't be bothered watching anymore.

The TNG era stuff had that little bit of magic, everything else after it has been trying and failing to recapture that.

I actually think TNG was a pretty brave production, it dealt with a lot of fairly edgy stuff and some of it was quite cerebral.

I really liked Lower Decks but refuse to pay for streaming so I've missed a chunk. I watch enough rubbish TV, paying to stream would make me watch even more!

Lower Decks has been a breath if fresh air into the ST Universe. It has been a fun watch, and has consistently improved over the four seasons. Sadly S5 is the final season, it will be missed. Lower Decks and SNW have certainly made Star Trek engaging to watch again.

I haven't watch ST Prodigy yet, any good?

I haven't either, but reviews suggest it's supposed to be, yes.  I've put it off because it's supposed to be kids TV.

Bit of a thread resurrection...

On the strength of this thread I watched Strange New Worlds and I'm watching Discovery.

I thought SNW was pretty good but Discovery seems to just be a bunch of whizz bang running about shouting and shooting. Also, it does that thing which kills a lot of sci-fi for me, putting the tech nonsense front and centre rather than characters or story.

Yeah, wasn't a big fan of discovery, found it hard to care about any of the main characters. And the main tech involved caused so many potential timeline issues that they had to zap them all off into an alternate universe, or far future, or something. At least the potential of Anson Mount as Pike and Ethan Peck as Spock were spotted and this led to SNW.

Also, any time the Klingon agent/Starfleet officer/love interest came on I found myself shouting 'I can hear you Clem Fandango!'

I really enjoyed the first two series of Discovery, it was so much darker than other series, and still quite enjoyed the rest of it. Watched all of Picard too. I think some people have rose tinted glasses on for TNG. I watched a lot of it back when it screened weekly then daily on BBC2 (IIRC) and there were always crap episodes I couldn't care less about, or the cringey cheesey corny scenes, and got the piss taken out of me by mates for watching it in the first place lol. None of the new stuff is any different in that regard. It's all pretty brain out and just enjoy it for what it is.

I only watch critique videos if the person linking to them words them like this:

"Watch xxxx totally DESTROY Picard TV series!"

Destroy has to be in caps and in bold of possible. If it complies with all this, then I'm all in. 😉

The great thing about TNG for me is that quite a lot of it was the opposite of brain out entertainment. There were a number of really thought provoking episodes* dealing with things like linguistics, personal identity, culture clash and gender issues.

I actually direct my high school philosophy students to some of them and they've prompted some really interesting discussion.

* And some shite ones too but that's to be expected.

That is all there is that in the various new ST series. TNG was really long running don't forget (178 episodes) so was able to explore much more.

That's good SF didn't there, it can be multilayered. Simplistic entertainment depending upon your age or attitude when watched, deeper when you actually dig into it.

The main problem I had with S1 of Picard was that it was dull. It didn't exactly inspire me to watch S2 or 3.

That's pretty much where I'm at. I gave up mid season1.

There's so much good SF out there now, why go through the "ordeal"?

As has been said several times now, you can (and arguably should) skip ahead to S3. Aside from knowing who a couple of established characters are it is broadly standalone. If you were a fan of TNG you'd be doing yourself a disservice in not watching it.

Just picking up on the Lower Decks love, the latest (and sadly last) is now showing.
I was not aware of the promo “posters” for the show, and their homage to the original show’s films.

Star Trek movies vs. Lower Decks
