That has the same shudder factor as any wild animal preying on humans - snakes that swallow people, white sharks, grizzly bears.... there's a deep-rooted fear of this in us all, made the more poignant when it involves a child.

That's astonishing.

As an aside, youtube only shows 311 views for the linked clip- anyone know why?

youtube only shows 311

Something to do with checking it's not spam, it will update later and show the real figure.

It's a frightening video, are we sure it's real??

The only reason I'm glad it didn't take the child as no doubt there would've been a cull of such dangerous birds called for 🙄

Scary and yet impressive at the same time - little dude would have been a gonna if it hadn't been a chubba Just shows how easy it would be for them to grab a lamb.

They kill fairly large animals in the wild. Much bigger than a baby, and this is entirely plausible, it just seems odd that the chap was filming it and then by pure coincidence it attacks the child right in front of him.

Pretty impressive bit of fakery if it is.

If I saw a golden eagle circling above my park, I'd probably film it.

EDIT: I take it back, there's some suspicious 'hang time' for the nipper just after the eagle lets go of him.

I occasionally stop the car or my bike to take photos or video of animals so it's not that unlikely he'd film it.

I believe that (historically) eagles were used by man to hunt wolf cubs in parts of Russia and Scandinavia.

Looks real enough to me, especially because you cannot really see the detail until it's shown in slo-mo and if fake it's clever how the filmer stops following the action on camera whilst running to help/see if OK.

Its ok, there were some men in a hide surrounded by pigeon decoys with their guns trained on the Eagle, should it have been sucessful.

Is this going to result in a massive debate about the video being faked? 🙂

It looks fake in those pictures because the motion of the two bodies together isn't realistic. But for all that it's incredibly well done.

My brother had a bird of prey land on his head once (at a raptor centre).
He grinned the whole way through but I knew he was in pain because I could see the blood trickling down the sides of his head.

My sister in law has scars on her head from a large bird of prey attacking her while she was out jogging in Germany. She probably faked it!

LOLZ - that video that is meant to show up the fakery just proves it's authenticity to my eyes..

there would be a bit of hang time as the kids upward trajectory slowed before he fell back.. but then it looks like maybe the eagle had maybe caught it's claw in some thread maybe from the kids clothes..

even if it is fake.. which I doubt, it's oresum 😀

I'm off to the park with yunki Jr and his raw meat hat

The amateur CGI is definitely getting better. Anyone remember the fake birdman thing? Loads of people fell for that despite the CGI looking terrible..

It doesn't matter if it's real or not, really.

Hunting wolves with golden eagles is absolutely real, and has been noted since before the days of youtube. They usually only target cubs just because of the danger to the bird, but they can take fully grown grey wolves. (and have also been documented killing adult reindeer)

This vid's fake- a failed strike would still have messed the kid up, maybe killed it- but a big eagle could kill a human child without too much bother, and could probably lift it too as long as it wasn't too big.

Which is awesome! Go eagles!

Fake for sure, had the eagle contacted with a child its talons would have done some serious damage, the child's clothes would have offered no protection at all. There's very little chance that the eagle was unable to get a good grip, the kid was a sitting target.

The eagles wing beats is wrong. When it is trying to take off with the kid, it looks like it barely changes, yet its gained 10 kilos of weight. The wing beat would be stronger and faster.

Despite the failed attempt, im a bit concerned that the more gullible members of public will take as gospel and then start campaigning for culling them

As clong says it's definitely a fake. When a raptor such as this hits it's prey the force is immense and the talons will sink deep. That kid would not have been unhurt as claimed in the Daily Hate article*, there would have been serious damage done. However as clong also says the worry now is that some will believe it and go out with either shotgun or poison.
.

*yes I did look at the article. Purely for research purposes. Now I feel dirty yet the more I scrub the dirt still won't come off...

It seems a CGI school in Montreal has a "hoax the internet" competition, with this being amongst their previous work...

i agree, the angle looks iffy and it looks CGI'esque when it's just off the ground swooping in, the colours change slightly

To be fair, genuine Quantum Locked Levitation looks like CGI anyway so it's kind of hard to tell:

There was a story of a bird of prey attacking a runner at Cwmcarn. I googled it as I saw one make a kill right on the trail in front of me. It was bloody hooogenormous.

It's amusing to think that folk think the brains behind CGI that looks as real as the video would either a) deliberately make the kid's trajectory look odd enough to be identifiable as a fake, or b) let Kevin the work experience guy do the trajectory and never think to check it over for realism before releasing on an unsuspecting public.

I reckon it's genuine. Kid not injured because of the amount of clothing he's wearing, especially the huge puffa jacket. Odd trajectory of kid when eagle lets go due to talons caught in clothing and pulling away strips not visible on camera. I have a cat with claws roughly 1/20th the size of eagle talons, and the amount of stuff they get caught fast in beggars belief.

Perhaps falconers gloves should be made of puffa jackets then, rather than double skinned leather 😀

A bird of that size would shred a double skinned leather gauntlet, unless that kid had chain mail under there, there would be an injury, even if it was from the impact. Part of the kill strike is the impact trauma the target receives, although it more pronounced in falcons than in eagles. The strike is used in the last moments of the flight, partly to drive the talons into the target and partly to stun the target.

A hit from a 10lb+ eagle with a 6ft wingspan and 2" talons would seriously mess up a toddler.

But this thread has reminded me of an awesome description of a peregrine's dive in JA Baker's book The Peregrine - a classic for raptor fans.

Vancouver is full of them. A small dog got picked up from a park in West Vancouver a year or so back and that was the last that was seen of it.

Oh and they harass the hell out of the Herons which annoys me no end but to be fair the Crows do the same to the Eagles so that's nature I guess.

Definite fake. Have a look at the slo-mo & see what happens to the kid's shadow. It comes & goes in intensity as if he is opaque at times.

A bird of that size would shred a double skinned leather gauntlet,

A toddler wearing a huge puffa jacket presents a much larger outline than is actually made up of toddler. The eagle may have grabbed hold of 95% puffa jacket, which may also explain the toddler falling from its clasp.

The Montreal college has 'fessed up to faking the vid (the eagle is not even a native species), but it was a nice try.
