I have no idea what this film is but I feel like if I watch it now, in my office, with the dark rainy sky outside and the way I feel right now, it might break me.

Thanks, I enjoyed it.  He didn't even need to get deep at the end - it had already triggered an existential crisis how little appreciation/enjoyment I now have for life  🙁

without getting deeper into Beau's world, is there a reason he looks like he's just come back from 6 months on a desert island?

He has just bought a gravel bike.

I think because personal appearance and personal acquisition of 'stuff' means nothing to Beau. He seems genuine, loves his family, life, adventures and nature. He is fascinated by the human condition. But a new car, a hair cut or a shiny tool leave him cold.

All his films are great, including some of his early adventure films which pre-date this channel.

Also got a Phd in outdoor Ed and was a lecturer until a couple of years ago.  Long time fan of his adventures and attitude.

I've enough familiarity with his channel to know that he does daft challenges, I was wondering if he'd just come off the back of doing some crazy endurance event rather than something medically sinister. .

Thanks for sharing that Matt. It was a boost to a grey day here.

Now, who's got land that we could do a big STW tree plant on?

That's nice, thanks for sharing. Is he the bloke who ate only tinned beans for a month or something?

33 years ago I was a ranger in the Pentland hills; I helped develop a school tree planting project with a couple of schools from Colinton and Oxgangs on a strip of land on the south side of the city bypass at Swanston. Now there's a nice  mixed woodland there with some bloody big trees. Gives me a wee boost every time I drive past it!

Working with trees I find gives a real appreciation for thinking long term, often beyond my own life time and also at landscape scale.

Another video with more reasons why tree's are great, particularly urban trees;

Funnily enough I am about to fence out 2 acres here in the Black Mountains and will be planting it with trees after christmas. If anyone fancies coming along to help plant then I can give details out closer to the day. I imagine there will be some volunteers from the tree planting charity I work with so you wouldn't be on your own.

I can also put you in touch with our volunteer planting coordinator if you would really like to get involveed in planting. We have our own nursery and have planting going on almost every single weekend throughout the season somewhere in the Bannau Brechiniog.

I worked developing a few community woodlands back in the late 90s early 2000s around Teesside. It's quite remarkable when I pass them in my way back home to visit family how well they've come on from tiny whips planted with school kids.

I also remember having a few close shave with local scores who were pissed off we were stopping them tearing about on their illegal motorbikes and threatening to do us in. It was their kids who'd been planting the trees too 🙄

Awesome work @welshfarmer!

I'm not quite as far away as I think Matt is but still generally too far for me to come down from Lancashire.

Do you know if there is a network of people doing similar things or how to find someone local to me?

Cheers, Mike

@timber I will let you know closer to the day. Cheers, appreciate the offer (I may slip a few Scots pine into the mix to make you feel a little more at home!)

@welshfarmer more the result of a change of job into some bigger plantations, still believe in right tree for the location with the view to creating useful woodlands that can be valued in the long term. Some feature Scots Pine in the landscape are nice and not uncommon in the central Bannau around old sheepfolds.

Friend of mine did it:  https://buylandplanttrees.co.uk/low-fell-and-raven-crag/

Looking forward to watching it develop.

If you've not read it already, I recommend Jean Giono's The Man who Planted Trees

Following up to this thread. @timber

Due to a change around of dates for some other plant sites, we will be planting here in Llanthony this coming Saturday. I realise it is also the Wales-England match in the evening but we would aim to be finished by 2 -3 o'clock. So if anyone fancies coming along to help out, meet like minded people, and get 1000+ trees in the ground in a beautiful part of the countryside, just drop me a pm for more details.

What kind of trees were you considering ?. Ancient forest type slow growers. Ash, elm, yew, oak type of stuff.

Will watch that video later.

Here's one I made earlier (not a video, but a tree planting).

After the microburst that wrecked our house and the mature trees in the road reserve, the Council (in their wisdom ) woodchipped anything in sight in the road reserve and carted it away.

We contacted the conservation team at council and said we'd happily plant it back up before weeds got hold. It's not a massive area (~30mx30m) but as it's the entrance to our driveway we wanted it to look decent.

They gave 400 appropriate seedlings from a nearby native nursery and we spent a few hours planting up. They also got contractors in for a few visits to weed.

18 months later (more like 16 in the later photos but i should get some new ones really) it's doing really well. Heaps of ground cover is keeping the invasive species at bay. Epic rainfall has helped this summer, and the kids are keeping a check on how 'their' trees are growing.

IMG_7259This reminded me to take another photo today.
The growth is so fast because the species are selected specifically for this location and there’s been heaps of rain. 600mm so far this year.
