Amazing.  I think I'm my whole life I've only ever seen 3 of them on different occasions.  Always makes me stop and watch for a while.

Love it!

I remember coming back from Glen Tilt and on the track there were multiple adders basking on the track.

Really nice beasts.

It's not my video. I just thought it was ace.

The last adder I saw was a learning experience - I've never seen a black adder before, or indeed one as big as this one was. Most of the adders I've seen are the beige/greyish with distinct back markings and maybe 60-70cm long. This black adder was nearly a metre I think and 'chunky' diameter. Sadly both of us were walking with phones in rucksack pockets, and it disappeared off before we had chance or inclination to get the phone out. It was just above White Bridge so not too far from where this video was filmed.

I don't think I've seen one bigger than a foot long for about 20 years...

They don't make 'em like they used to!

Never seen an Adder only the odd grass snake and a slow worm on a trail at Ae one time. It shot off at a rate of knots so not very well named.

Nice video though 👍

I saw two on Saturday heading out towards Mount Battock from Bridge of Dye. Both were about 50cm, managed a photo of one and nearly ran the other over 😳

What a great thing to see. I rescued one from the sea a few years back. I was leading a coasteer on a really calm day and this little adder was trying to get out of the sea up onto the cliff but kept falling back. I used my safety bag to lift it out and climbed up to above the splash zone where there were lots of ledges in the vegetation.
It was stunning close up. I love snakes.

Reminds me of the snake that slithered out of our pond a few years ago! 👍

You've clearly never seen how fast an actual Scottish worm moves...

My daughter saw this one on her DofE Exped in the Lammermuirs last weekend

The only other place was Mull.  Saw 3 in one day  heather in a glen on the north side of the island.

Mull is quite snakey. I saw a4 or 4 in one day when doing dog training there a few years ago. Each one of them was big and fat.

Yeah, walking from Carsaig in the spring we saw loads, I lost count. They were very dozy as early in the year.

We've got loads around our area (Ash Ranges, Surrey).

Walking along the very low Basingstoke Canal last year I surprised many that just dived in the canal and swam to the opposite bank.

Last (which was also my first) time I came across one I almost accidentally ran it over, thought it was a straight black piece of water pipe. Missed out on a story of running over an animal with a Maxxis Dissector though.

Britain eh? Everything’s out to kill you. If it isn’t the politicians it’s the snakes.

I didn't realise that pheasants ate adders 😟

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/oct/01/adder-extinct-across-britain-snake-threat-game-birds-release

I have seen fields in the Kent North Downs heaving with pheasants. I had assumed they were vegetarians ☹️

I don't see as many these days which is sad.  I have seen some fantastic black ones at Swinley though.

The swimming adder looks to be a male.  When they get the scent of a receptive female they head off in a straight line, unfortunately this often results in them being run over as they cross roads, or being predated by birds as they cross open ground.

If you are lucky enough to spot an adder you can report the sighting via your local ARG, e.g.

Strangely someone mentioned this on a ride here in Norfolk the other day, we'd not seen an adder here for a while, then saw 3 on 3 occasions in the space of a few weeks, we wondered if adder number had managed to increase whilst pheasant numbers were low over COVID (gamekeepers not breeding them for shoots, when there weren't any..)
