......what would they be? and why?
I'm starting to pick up a few of these tools for projects I've started (new found love of wood!), seems to be a lot out there. Just wondering what people see as their 'essentials'
by hand or power ? its 10 tools if you say both.
T square
tenon saw
chisel
mallet
mortise guage
Plunge saw
mitre saw
drill driver
nail gun
tape measure
🙂
if it was 6 I’d add
dab radio
Tricky one, can I have a vice, hammer and drill with bits as universal tools?
Tenon saw
Try square
Smoothing plane
Bevel-edge chisel (25mm if I only get one)
Bench hook
Japanese pull saw.
25mm chisel (bevel as above)
Vice
Workbench
Square.
Edit: the chisel would be the dilemma and would have to base it on work mist likely to do.
Portable workbench (2 trestles, 2 pieces of CLS, MFT-type top)
Festool Rail Saw
Big box of clamps and bench dogs
Big box of metric tape measures and rulers
Good drill driver
Pocket hole jig
Jigsaw
I know that's 7 (even if counted leniently) but it's the bare minimum. And I'm assuming you've got a supply of pencils and a sharpener.
Jigsaw wouldn't even make top 30!
They're horrible.
If 5only powertools wouldn't get a look in.
Yes but for notching I can't use the circular saw.
mallet
mortise guage
Those are two good early woodworking projects to make, wouln't waste two out of five spaces for them.
Bench hook
And another.
I would go for a rip saw (can do cross cuts, but not ideal), tenon saw (or another back/pull saw), jack plane (no. 5) , bevel edge chisel and a brace & bits.
Borrow something to make a 90 deg angle and make a wooden try square and t square as first projects and a mallet and simple marking gauge after that.
Thicknesser
Power Planer
Mitre Saw
Table Saw
Joiners Axe
Get things done faster!
You going to use all those by eye yeah chestercopperpot?
claw hammer, chisel,t square, tape measure, screwdriver.
Working with wood...
chainsaw
axe
draw knife
my 3” whittling knife
spoon knife
@ joshvegas - Most people have already got a pencil, tape measure and some sort of straight edge.
Depends what you are making but my go to list would be:
Drill/driver
Rail saw
Sliding mitre saw
Hand router
CNC router
Realistically need a few hand tools too but they don't cost much (japanese pull saw, chisel, hammer) and some sanding and finishing stuff
Rail saw. My 36v cordless Makita is dope!
Pull saw.
Chisels
Combi/impact drivers
Tape measure
Most of the stuff I do is at the cruder end of woodwork.
Chainsaw
Auger
Drill/driver
Heavy claw hammer (for 6" nails)
Tractor forks/crane
Plunge saw,
Square,
Drill/impact driver
Metric tape measure
Mitre saw
F-clamps
As has been said above, it really depends upon what sort of woodworking you are planning on doing, my tools vary upon whether I'm doing boat stuff, oak framing, cabinet making or first fix stud work.
The first three tools you will need irrespective are:
Sharp pencil
Means by which to sharpen your pencil
Measuring device.
