You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Imagine you're still a while away from retiring - both in age and financial security, but you do have a lump of cash available. You have no strong ties to any particular part of the UK, your dependants are no longer dependant.
You need to live somewhere and you need to do something.
Where would you live and what would you do?
The aim would be general happiness / quality of life.
You don't have particularly expensive tastes and your bikes are all paid for.
🙂

Mid Wales, thread re-opened.
Somewhere in the Cairngorm NP probably
Scotland or Wales, sea at the front for me fishing & hills at the back for biking.
Middle of my own forest, don't mind where.
Live in York, Yorkshire now but would love to live in Cornwall, somewhere near the end on the Atlantic coast.
Not in the UK : Canaries or southern Europe somewhere.
Hmmm I'm picturing lots of woods, valleys and greeness so far . . . and I do like plate sized Yorkshire Pudding. (of course greeness = rain!)
inverness seem to grab me. or keswick area.

Interesting Caher - southern europe has crossed my mind. Not St Tropez of course, but there are plenty of normal places. Maybe within an hour of the pyranees or the southern end of the alps . . .
ton - what time does it get dark up there in winter though?
Somewhere in the Lakes. Probably around the Buttermere area.
Yep my buddies sent me some pictures from the Alps today and the sun was everywhere - i rode around Dorking in real gloom.
sst, early i reckon, but i love the seasons, and winter is my fave.
Why would you retire to somewhere where everyone will hate you just because you are english?
Im trying to sort out a move to Malvern, seems to tick a lot of the boxes for us with a young family
+1 Yorkshire
Oh hang on... 8) 😀
Norfolk.
Pandora, failing that, Dartmoor
lakes or west highlands for the biking, climbing and walking
sst, early i reckon, but i love the seasons, and winter is my fave.
and I guess in summer they get 18 hrs of sunlight.
Inverness area for me
Close to some of the best areas to ride
Nice coastline
Like ton, I like winter
Edinburgh, probably Morningside. Nice town/city, big enough to have all you could ever really need. Cycleable to the Pentlands, not too long a drive into the Highlands.
Somewhere in the Lakes would be my choice.

near binners - not that i like binners you understand but he lives in a great area 😀
Tynemouth or Glenridding.
Stavley, Ings or the outskirts of Ambleside, Cumbria. Failing that both the wife and I have always enjoyed the fort bill area of Scotland.
Sheildag,north west Scotland...I'd fish,maybe do a bit of cooking for spends.....stunning area...and I'm fae yorkshire 😀
Wouldn't change where I lived my whole life in Llangollen N Wales, but can I move it closer to the sea? Surf in the morning and biking in the arvo!
the Solway coast
South Devon, South Hams region. Been staying down there for the last three years, made good friends down there, and I adore that stretch of coast around Start Bay, and I could happily live there. No idea what I'd do, I'm sure I could find something.
Start Bay, from the SW Coast Path, Hallsands on the left, Start Point on the right.
Rossendale, its ace
Behind the NatWest at Swindon.... Thread Closed
North East close to the sea but near the border of Scotland ...
Neath.
Wherever my family take me.
I dread my kids living further away than I could reach within a couple of hours.
There's a house at the end of my road I quite like.

Shut up, only worse place in the UK is Lancashire!!
Lots of very nice places to choose from, but what to do for a bit on income?
Ice Cream man? You just need a van and some lollies!
Open a little cafe? Sausage Egg and Chips can't be that hard?
Buy a chain saw and become a tree surgeon?
Whilst there are many places one could argue are better than where we currently live I can't see us moving from Surrey. Major transport links, the coast, the Capital etc all within an hours drive and the Surrey Hills are not only beautiful but offer some pretty good riding. Once I'm retired then anything's for grabs....
Llanddewi Brefi.
Inverness you say ? that would be this place then
Twixt the Lakes and Dales. That would do for me.

POSTED 2 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST
My brother moved from Harrogate to Truro two years ago.
He hates it but with two kids about to do their GCSEs he is stuck.
Croyde without a doubt.
Interesting that a couple choose Edinburgh. I live just outside it and my plan is to move North in a couple of years. Mind you, I'll not be looking for employment so that makes the choice easier. I've always loved the Cairngorms but a sea view also appeals.
So - you're limiting your choice to England?bland - Member

Living in York myself, but if money was no object. I think it would be Heptonstall.
New Zealand...mountains, undulating grasslands, glaciers, beaches...just about every type of terrain bar deserts.
Perth.
I chose Ilkley.
Happy with that, fell running from the door yesterday, ride up into the dales today
Then walk to the local with the family
Does it get any better than that?
Downside is I have to drive to London at 4:30 am tomorrow :-0
Difficult one. I like Perthshire. Dunkeld is at the edge of the Highlands but close to Perth for work.
If work was less pressing then Assynt is hard to beat. I think the most spectacular part of the UK.
Live in Peebles at the moment which has everything I need. If looking further afield then New Zealand is the only country outside of Scotland I would wish to live.
... I wouldn't. I'd live in the Ardennes.
Or if I had to work, I'd live in Gent.
i live in a village 15 mins from inverness, 3 mins from the beach and 10 mins from learnie trails, road bike routes on my backdoor, cairngorms 30 mins away, oh and klunk i built the gate lodge and estate managers house in photos on your link, multi millionaires pad at ailean aigas , yup ticks all the boxes here............ 😀
Or if I had to work, I'd live in Gent.
I'd live with you, if that's ok with your other half 😉
Very happy where I am just now - Suffolk, prettily undulating countryside, trails from my door, forests nearby, coasts ditto - great local food, and Adnams beer........or in another life, Bishops Castle or Montgomery on the Shropshire/Powys border (so much good riding nearby, and again cracking beer and food, plus prehistoric hill forts).....or Northumberland......or the Gower.
Ambleside......please.
Looking to move to somewhere up near Huddersfield next year, providing we can both find jobs. Work/life balance choice. Thought about North Norfolk, the Lakes, Cornwall and the Highlands, but South/West Yorkshire gives us the best chance of suitable jobs in an area with good biking and walking links and decent transport links.
I love the 'Gorms and the North East but, really, Inverness has got to be the least inspiring town (ok, city)in the country..
Ludlow, Cornwall or York. Anywhere but ****in Stoke which is where I've lived all 26 years of my life thus far.

Ft Bill, surely?
Croyde without a doubt.
Really? I've just moved from there after 4 years. Finally had enough of inflated prices for everything and ****s from up the line remarking on how I must have a wonderfully slow pace of life. The mountain biking is shite too (road riding is good though).
Much happier being back in Plymouth. I've no intention of moving anywhere. It's not for everyone though.
Lakes - NW beyond Keswick. All the good bits cheaper and less tourists.
I was in and around Cockermouth for 2 stints about 6/7 years in total. Best place I have lived. As much as you want on your doorstep, good employment in lots of areas, day trip distance to lots of places, short weekend trips to loads more. And some fine beer and great people.
crikey - MemberOr if I had to work, I'd live in Gent.

Either you really like Gent too or I've completely misunderstood your post!
I think MrsJulianA would have an issue with your suggestion! (Unless you happen to be Tom Ford's identical twin?)
The house on the wee promontary out into derwent water, directly across from watendlath. Beautiful.
motorman - do you think I'd get planning permission for a wee howff on that spit of land?
Dorset, as it's as nice as most of the nicer places mentioned here but the weather's better.
Peebles, Scottish Broders. Thread Closed
Surprised Pembrokeshire not mentioned yet.
Stunning coastline and not too crowded.
I love Northumberland but it is just too cold.....
I'd move 6 miles along the coastline from where i stay at the moment (kircudbright sw-scotland), buy a nice little beach house chalet and i'd be perfectly happy and content, one room for sleeping in, one room for bikes, one room for eating/drinking/socialising with a wee log burner for heating/cooking and a glass wall fronting onto the shoreline or beach. Trouble is the cost of the land is prohibitive otherwise i'd have plonked a caravan/mobile home down already, Anyone got a spare £80,000 they don't need so i can at least buy the land?.
if I didn't have to worry about income, I'd move to Eire. specifically, NW, Co Longford/Leitrim. Makes you realise how overcrowded West Yorkshire really is
North Devon or Pembrokeshire.
Don't know what I'd do for a living though. Manufacturing is non-existent in both, and I certainly don't want to work in an oil refinery.
But if the lottery numbers came up The Wife has ear marked the house she wants in Saunton. 🙄
I I would live here...... Corran
Bigblackshed, those new places near the hotel..yes please.
Halfway along the A66.
Equidistant to:
North Yorkshire Moors
North Pennines
Yorkshire Dales
Lakes
In a few hours you're in either Scotland or North Wales..
New Zealand...mountains, undulating grasslands, glaciers, beaches...just about every type of terrain bar deserts.
Whereabouts in the UK is New Zealand?
For me I reckon it possibly would be outskirts of Edinburgh - if I could ever afford it. Somewhere around Keswick would do nicely too.
On balance (riding/work) I'm hard pushed to think of better than here in Bethesda (N. Wales) – particularly given the sunshine and a colourful autumn. A 7 mile off road commute into uni' to keep me ticking over and lots of mountains on my door step with trails that I don't even know about yet. What else could one want?
