Imagine you're still a while away from retiring - both in age and financial security, but you do have a lump of cash available. You have no strong ties to any particular part of the UK, your dependants are no longer dependant.

You need to live somewhere and you need to do something.

Where would you live and what would you do?

The aim would be general happiness / quality of life.

You don't have particularly expensive tastes and your bikes are all paid for.

🙂

Hmmm I'm picturing lots of woods, valleys and greeness so far . . . and I do like plate sized Yorkshire Pudding. (of course greeness = rain!)

Interesting Caher - southern europe has crossed my mind. Not St Tropez of course, but there are plenty of normal places. Maybe within an hour of the pyranees or the southern end of the alps . . .

Why would you retire to somewhere where everyone will hate you just because you are english?

Im trying to sort out a move to Malvern, seems to tick a lot of the boxes for us with a young family

Edinburgh, probably Morningside. Nice town/city, big enough to have all you could ever really need. Cycleable to the Pentlands, not too long a drive into the Highlands.

South Devon, South Hams region. Been staying down there for the last three years, made good friends down there, and I adore that stretch of coast around Start Bay, and I could happily live there. No idea what I'd do, I'm sure I could find something.

Lots of very nice places to choose from, but what to do for a bit on income?

Ice Cream man? You just need a van and some lollies!
Open a little cafe? Sausage Egg and Chips can't be that hard?
Buy a chain saw and become a tree surgeon?

Whilst there are many places one could argue are better than where we currently live I can't see us moving from Surrey. Major transport links, the coast, the Capital etc all within an hours drive and the Surrey Hills are not only beautiful but offer some pretty good riding. Once I'm retired then anything's for grabs....

Interesting that a couple choose Edinburgh. I live just outside it and my plan is to move North in a couple of years. Mind you, I'll not be looking for employment so that makes the choice easier. I've always loved the Cairngorms but a sea view also appeals.

I chose Ilkley.

Happy with that, fell running from the door yesterday, ride up into the dales today

Then walk to the local with the family

Does it get any better than that?

Downside is I have to drive to London at 4:30 am tomorrow :-0

Difficult one. I like Perthshire. Dunkeld is at the edge of the Highlands but close to Perth for work.
If work was less pressing then Assynt is hard to beat. I think the most spectacular part of the UK.
Live in Peebles at the moment which has everything I need. If looking further afield then New Zealand is the only country outside of Scotland I would wish to live.

Very happy where I am just now - Suffolk, prettily undulating countryside, trails from my door, forests nearby, coasts ditto - great local food, and Adnams beer........or in another life, Bishops Castle or Montgomery on the Shropshire/Powys border (so much good riding nearby, and again cracking beer and food, plus prehistoric hill forts).....or Northumberland......or the Gower.

Looking to move to somewhere up near Huddersfield next year, providing we can both find jobs. Work/life balance choice. Thought about North Norfolk, the Lakes, Cornwall and the Highlands, but South/West Yorkshire gives us the best chance of suitable jobs in an area with good biking and walking links and decent transport links.

Really? I've just moved from there after 4 years. Finally had enough of inflated prices for everything and ****s from up the line remarking on how I must have a wonderfully slow pace of life. The mountain biking is shite too (road riding is good though).

Much happier being back in Plymouth. I've no intention of moving anywhere. It's not for everyone though.

Lakes - NW beyond Keswick. All the good bits cheaper and less tourists.

I was in and around Cockermouth for 2 stints about 6/7 years in total. Best place I have lived. As much as you want on your doorstep, good employment in lots of areas, day trip distance to lots of places, short weekend trips to loads more. And some fine beer and great people.

Either you really like Gent too or I've completely misunderstood your post!

I think MrsJulianA would have an issue with your suggestion! (Unless you happen to be Tom Ford's identical twin?)

Stunning coastline and not too crowded.

I love Northumberland but it is just too cold.....

I'd move 6 miles along the coastline from where i stay at the moment (kircudbright sw-scotland), buy a nice little beach house chalet and i'd be perfectly happy and content, one room for sleeping in, one room for bikes, one room for eating/drinking/socialising with a wee log burner for heating/cooking and a glass wall fronting onto the shoreline or beach. Trouble is the cost of the land is prohibitive otherwise i'd have plonked a caravan/mobile home down already, Anyone got a spare £80,000 they don't need so i can at least buy the land?.

North Devon or Pembrokeshire.

Don't know what I'd do for a living though. Manufacturing is non-existent in both, and I certainly don't want to work in an oil refinery.

But if the lottery numbers came up The Wife has ear marked the house she wants in Saunton. 🙄

Halfway along the A66.

Equidistant to:
North Yorkshire Moors
North Pennines
Yorkshire Dales
Lakes

In a few hours you're in either Scotland or North Wales..

Whereabouts in the UK is New Zealand?

For me I reckon it possibly would be outskirts of Edinburgh - if I could ever afford it. Somewhere around Keswick would do nicely too.

On balance (riding/work) I'm hard pushed to think of better than here in Bethesda (N. Wales) – particularly given the sunshine and a colourful autumn. A 7 mile off road commute into uni' to keep me ticking over and lots of mountains on my door step with trails that I don't even know about yet. What else could one want?
