... what would it be?

I'm going to be there for an afternoon and overnight soon. I know nothing about the place. Suggestions for where to stay and what to do would be very much appreciated. Accommodation wise I don't need glitz, just somewhere clean and convenient.

Cheers.

Stay safe....

downtown area is very safe/ feels very safe.

Things to do; you won't get half of this done but you can pick a couple.

Aquarium,
Oak park architecture/ frank lloyd wright. (the temple is a highlight)
River walk.
Lake shore trail.
Willis Tower skydeck.
Lou Malnatis Pizza.
Cheesecake Factory.

+2 Buddy Guys, followed or preceeded by Malnati's for a huge steak with a whole lobster on the side 🙂

Billy Goat Tavern is interesting, but the worst beer I have ever tasted!

On the subject of restaurants, I should probably remind you all I'm veggie (and for added yuks, allergic to cheese). Eating in the US can be challenging.

Visit Navy pier
Stay nearby or on the main street.

Avoid anywhere out of the tourist area

If you have time for only one thing, make it an architecture boat tour.

If you have a little more time, the main museums are world class, Art Institute, Field Museum(Natural History), Adler Planetarium, Museum of Contemporary Art or Museum of Science and Industry, none will disappoint. If I could only pick one it would be the Science and Industry(, followed by the Field) but to get to it, come at it from the city centre and stick to the lakeshore road, it is surrounded by some of the worst shooting districts.

That sounds fine. It's the best shooting districts I want to avoid.

(Sound advice though, ta.)

TBH, the only time it's really been a problem was in Vegas. I figured a tourist area would have had a lot of options for international travellers. I basically lived off chips for a fortnight, I nearly starved. Most other times it's been fine.

A vote for the boat tour followed by pizza at one of the deep dish places - unlike pizza anywhere else, you'll only need a small!

Heh.

Problem: suitcase has a lock on it for which I don't have a key, so cannot replace the lock with one for which I do.

Solution: dig out the lock picks from my bag and crack the lock.

Conclusion: eh, leave lock picks at home before boarding plane.

Solution: leave the suitcase at home, then you won't have the stress of picking the lock.

I am in Chicago right now what's your budget for accommodation? When do you arrive?

Everywhere is a bit full because of the post season baseball. The Cubs are due to be playing tonight , tomorrow and Thursday.

I am at Hotel Felix . The Godfrey next door is good but pricier.

This statement is spot on :-

"downtown area is very safe/ feels very safe. "

Go for a drink in the Clarke Street Ale House and then a hotdog at Portillos.

Tickets for the next Cubs game start at $90 for standing only.........

I fly out on Thursday, I should be there about 3pm-ish I think.

I don't have a budget. It's just a layover, I just need somewhere to collapse after a flight, a meal and a beer or 12 before I head South on Friday. I have no plans beyond going to see the Foo Fighters in Nashville on Monday which was the excuse I used to justify to myself a road trip holiday. (-:

Ah, tits. Well I don't have to stay in Chicago, I can make a start on travelling for a bit. I just thought it'd be silly not to have a mooch for a few hours whilst I was there.

Price quoted for Thursday night: $600. Gouging bastards, it's sub-$200 on Friday.

That will be the impact of the baseball , if the Cubs lose tonight or tomorrow the Thursday game won't be played so the prices may plummet

If you like your bars loud and seedy and you just have one evening, I would skip the more 'touristy' venues like Buddy Guy's (as good as it is), and the House of Blues, and instead head to Kingston Mines. Two stages, live music from 2200-0400 every night, and always a great atmosphere. It's been going since the sixties and is still there so can't be doing too much wrong.

You've got me there, but I'm not particularly a massive blues fan. Bluesy rock, maybe.

Good, clean and cheap hotel - Ohio House Motel. I love it. It looks like a 50s road motel, which it is but the location is epic and price excellent. I go to Chicago a week every other year and this is where I stay.

Where you going on the road trip? Just got back from New Orleans - Chicago. St Louis & Memphis are awesome. If you can get to Memphis the Nat. Civil Rights Museum is well worth a visit.

I was there 20 odd years ago with work.

This is what I did.
1. Get absolutely blasted in the Déjà vu Lounge (strip club – pants on and alcohol) in Kalamazoo the night before with one of the senior engineers from my company.
2. Got one dollar bills and ten dollar bills mixed up. This made me very popular with the ( pants on ) dancing ladies.
3. Have to rescue the afore mentioned senior engineer from hotel security because he was trying to swipe into the wrong room using a credit card instead of a key card.
4. Fly to Chicago the day after feeling very unwell.
5. Take the train in to town as we had a long connection and O’Hare is a miserable place to wait.
6. Go up the Sears Tower in the fog. The express elevator nearly turned me inside out. Do the Ferris Bueller thing against the window. See nothing but the air con units on the adjacent buildings because of the fog.
7. Go to Planet Hollywood. Throw up in the khazi.
8. Taxi back to the airport.
9. Long flight home sweating out booze and greasy food.

Don’t do any of the above.
