...write down the first number that comes into my head. I win the contract, no?

Amazing we are still seeing these kind of 'mistakes' happen. Strikes me that the bidder also has their profit doubled immediately...

Bonging clock costs twice a shed load of wonga:

Maybe,

Invariably though what happens in these cases is that the contractor will be given a job with a set of perimeters and quote based on that.

Once they been awarded the work and go over it in great detail every Tom, Dick and Harry even vaguely connected with it will want to put their mark on it for the sake of their own profile / ego / “needs” aka dream and wishes at someone elses expense and it doubles in scale and complexity.

This stuff really annoys me. How can it possibly cost that. I reckon mcmoonter could do it for bugger all.

We're paying I assume.

We always pay.

Don’t forget the works were signed off by cross party committee, who subsequently backtracked when the first lot of figures and Big Bens estimated lack of Bong was outed...

So all involved, all signed for it. All to blame but the contractor walks away happy.. that’s commercialism for you.

Nah the MPs and Lords have had a whip round for it.

They’re doing Buckingham Palace too.

The original estimate would have come from the client (QS and P6 planner)...civil service

Went to tender and real construction companies costed this and got the real figures... Mace, Skanska, Multiplex, Ovebury, Vinci, Bouyges .. etc...

The real cost is the tier 1 principal contractor who do this for a living.

Bit like Mrs Jones thinks her house is worth £1million but builder comes and assesses it and finds it full to rot and old blown fronting, asbestos and subsidence... not quite what Mrs Jones thinks...

Does that include changing the chime to La Cucaracha?
