I like the spelling nazis, they make me laugh when they get all upset over peoples spelling and punctuation

Nobody is getting "all upset" by bad spelling.

It's pointed out either for a laugh, or to score an easy point.

The only upset seems to be from people who don't like their errors being pointed out.

Get a grip.

It's quicker to just post a picture of an enormous horse cock.

I don't mind the odd spelling/grammar error, but when you have to read a post twice, and slowly, to get any sense of what the poster is trying to get across it's a bit much. Some people clearly don't bother reading through what they've just typed before hitting the Send Post button.
I wouldn't bother correcting other's mistakes, but I can understand why it happens. It's a bit like saying "Again, in English", to one of your mates with a regional accent when they've just blurted out something unintelligible. It's just a bit of banter, nothing more.

Wow this internetz is serious biuisness! Don't let this escalate until Koffi Annan gets here and we can sort this out.

its a bit of both.
Post can be so poor they are unintelligible, then again perfectly well crafted and grammatically correct posts can be utter pish as well

I care more about the ides it conveys than the method. It may occasionally make the message harder to see though its rare you cannot tell IME.

The dialogue on this forum is conducted through the written word, those who are not able to express themselves well through this medium are at a disadvantage and should welcome attempts made by more learned forum members to lift them up to an appropriate standard

is the ladder long enough for me to get up on to your high horse?

That is issue, those who care about grammar also insist they are the brightest- its not necessarily a sign of intelligence or a good argument though it may be of their arrogance.

When I first started coming here I thought the forum was populated by rude, arrogant public school tossers, it used to drive me mental, but I I kept using the site for chat and info..

After a while, I realised that what I had taken for rudeness and childish piss taking was just mostly friendly banter and in-jokes that have been going on here for years and years.. I was just taking it personally..

As for the spelling and grammar nazis? Well, it's actually a really good tool for keeping a certain level of intelligent communication going, angry young school aged low IQ trolls that you see all over every other forum and message board on the web, simply can't be arsed. If you embrace it, you become kind of encouraged to take a bit of pride on your presentation, using spellcheck and looking up words etc.. So it's like a free self motivated education really, which is nothing to be sniffed at in this age of cut throat capitalism..

It's a shame I agree, life should be more wholesome, less shallow.. But it's not

mtfu princess innit

This might be one of the best things I have ever seen written on STW...

You could argue it's actually a bit rude to expect other people to make the effort to decipher poorly written posts, where the poster hasn't made much effort to communicate effectively. 😉

I've never seen a post on here that was so badly written I couldn't understand it - apart from when it's been written like that on purpose.

On the other hand I don't live on here - so maybe I've just been lucky?

In any case, there will always be a billy-no-mates aka "Milk Monitor" who no one in real life will listen to but gets the attention he craves on here causing trouble . . . lol. Just ignore him 🙂

Conversely, I have seen many posts on here that are grammatically correct, yet I cannot for the life of me work out what the poster is on about. Although not so often since the great purge.

Last night I read two posts that used the word plump in place of plumb. I was tempted to turn it into a pedantic pun but remembered the scorn I received the last time I foolishly attempted such depravity.

Anyway, fattening up just to buy a particular bike is a bit much, if you ask me...

I hope stu is actually out riding his bike on such a nice morning, Still can help wondering if it's just a Postlethwaite/DTF wind up. The OP is a masterpiece. You look once and see the odd typo/mistake then, like a great piece of art, you look again and see more, then again and more. To fit so many errors into all but one sentence is quite an achievement - are we sure it's not just a wind up?

But autocorrect doesn't help at times. I have responded to Grum and the autocorrect changed it to grim by mistake and this week didn't Mr Woppit get upset by being called Woptit. All genuine errors it seems!

Well this went well. Discussion has been achieved.
I think that a few people have seen my point. And others have seen the point and mocked, which I totally get aswel. I use the forum for advice and to pass time when on the bog.
I just find it disheartening that someone sat at a keyboard many miles away mocks someone for their spelling. You do understand but you are just being a tool.
Yes I have been out for a little potter about this morning. Don't have mud tyres so had to come home and trawl stw' to find the best mud tyres, and thread about said tyres .........

Good that you went for a ride, it's a nice morning (cough) "as well". Since you are serious, then just let it be. It's mainly meant as humour like a lot of stuff on here. Might come across differently in the wee hours though.

Out of curiosity do the "correctors" for whatever reason, do the same when someone is talking? Regardless of a speak impediment or English not being their first language.

Probably not, but then it will be obvious in real life if someone has a speech impediment, or English isn't their first language.

Its not always obvious depending on what it is.

Then again I can sometimes tell by what someone has written if they are dyslexic, by certain characteristics in the mistakes they make. Similar to the plump and plumb example given above.
I know I always make mistakes when I write, even with auto correct. I wouldn't post anything without it. Anything official I write my wife proof reads first. The problem with some of the assumptions on here is that posters like myself are being lazy (another old teachers favourite) which isn't the case at all. I bet I spend more time re/reading my posts than most, but still make mistakes.

I just find it disheartening that someone sat at a keyboard many miles away mocks someone for their spelling

I tend to agree with this.

Apples, oranges. I won't normally worry about the same precision in my speech when I'm talking*, but even when posting on here I do usually try to make sure it's to a similar standard to what I'd write in an official report. It is accepted that people make mistakes, and in that case I'd hope any comment would just be piss taking rather than point scoring.

* though I have just spent the last week in a situation where I had to remember to call somebody "sir", so was trying for similar standards in my speech - I'm sure the way some on here write their posts wouldn't have gone down well.

Spelling really matters.

You only have to look at the 'problems with my wife' thread for evidence that a simple i/e mistake can change the meaning of what's typed 🙂

Again Jaimie wins the Internet for his graphic skillz.
I do think it's a bit rich for someone who's been a member for three months to take it upon themselves to lecture people who've been on this site for far longer, probably years. Ten, in my case.
I can't be arsed to correct other member's spelling, but it's something I really notice, and do my best to correct in my own posts, because I spent far too many years proof-reading reams of text in publishing and print.
To the OP, I respectfully suggest you lighten up, otherwise you're likely to find yourself on the receiving end of a bit more than light-hearted banter.

Don't worry im still here. Don't get me wrong im all for banter. its a huge part of my job and I'm quite sure what I find amusing would horrify a lot on here.
I am merely pointing out that it isn't constructive to read a thread, and then contribute nothing other than point out someones spelling and grammar. That isn't banter at all. Its pointless. And more so when people have issues with reading and writing.

Stu180; I actually tried to defend you in you first post at god knows what time this morning suggesting you were probably just doing some peshed posting.

However, you just sound like a bit of a plonker now (you may not be, but you sound like it)

The post that you are reacting to initially (I had to research it) wasn't particularly funny, but neither was it offensive.

There are people here that intentionally post a contentious topic at around 8am, ready to start to some nuclear all-day argument that monopolises this place for the whole day, or even more, just to goad those that cannot resist a debate. That is way worse than any pedantry in my opinion.

Spelling/gramatical pendants are kind of useful to be honest, as long as they are correct 😉

One thing I've realised in my short time here is there are a lot of very educated and informed folk. There are aslo an awful lot of uneducated yet informed folk. One thing though, is that there is a huge community, with only a couple of tits that are easily identified.

If someone tells you to get a dictionary, and it's not funny or informative, just ignore it.

(But donn't piss off Jamie, because he'll just PS you murdering someone and you'll end up as currency in Belmarsh)
