It was on a photograph of a local pub taken circa. 1978.
I have an idea but would like your thoughts.
Schmitt or that fast interceptor (Jensen?)
It nissan/Datsun Z car
At first glance I thought Ford Capri but not so sure now
Opel Monza
My first instinct is to say capri mk2.
Opel is a good shout.
It looks nowt like a Capri - or a Jensen Interceptor.
Opel Monza - not sure.
I was thinking Toyota Celica.
Opel ascona?
Definitely not an interceptor, wrong rear window and wrong vent potion on the side
Def not a crapi - my first thought was a Monza, though it might be a Datsun?
That's a Monza alright.

Hmm, it's not quite right though
Its a 1978 Monza GSE.
Look at the rear side window, its angular not curved like all the other cars mentioned.
Inset window divider
Side trim running across doors in the right place
Silver wheels with black paint
Rear wiper
Car looks shorter due to angle
Hillman ??? Scimitar ?
Its a 1978 Monza GSE.
But the reversing lights are in the wrong place in the cluster.
Obviously, the only really important issue here is, what does the car self-identify as?
Might look like a Monza to us but wishes to be treated as an Isetta
Vulvo
Celica.

Pretty certain it's an Opel Monza, although it could be an Audi 100 Coupe.
Hmm actually, i'm now leaning to a 1978 Celica GT (as above but thats a later 80's model)

The blue celica paint code is 861 and the yellow one 541.
I am a saddo.
Celica - the rear screen wiper on the Monza is wrong
Rover 3500 SD1?
Less exotic than the suggestions above, but a lot more of them about.
Audi
Opel Manta?
edit:no, not quite the shape I remember. The manta is a bit too 'square'
I was thinking opel but was there not a sporty Renault of that era it could be?
I'm going left field here with a Matra-Simca Bagheera. Or it was the instaneous name that came to my mind when I first saw the pic in the OP.
i would normally at this point insert a picture of the Matra for your convenience, but I can no longer be arsed to fight trying to post a pic on here with an iPad device, it may work now and be hunky dory easy least but my last attempt a few weeks ago was in the realms of frustration that only BT and SSE have attained.
anyway, Matra Simca Bagheera. You heard it here first . Smiley emoji, my keyboard is now playing up
Or possibly Toyota Or Datsun...
1970 (ish) Audi 100 coupe S
TJ - You're thinking of the Renault Fuego...

Audi coupe not a chance
Maybe others could spend a few seconds googling before posting 😂
I think TJ meant a Renault Alpine.
But from the photos above its a Celica.

Cheeky ****. I did google and just put the wrong description up đŸ˜‰
It's close to a 100 5E from 78'. Lights looks good but can't make out the rear deffinition enough.

alpine was what I meant. Fuego was a bit later IIRC.
The baghera was a fave of mine - IIRC 3 seats across the front? But its not that

derek_starship,
All these suggestions and yet no one has asked why you want to know, I'm intrigued, go on please tell why you want to find out what it is, pretty please!
Celica is a good shout, I was thinking Honda Accord, but I think the wiper is the wrong way round.
Datsun Sunny Coupe.
As mentioned previously, it's a Toyota Celica RA42 Liftback.
The celicas pictured have painted bumpers. I can only remember chrome ones which might have been a UK thing. Th OP picture appears to have chrome bumpers.
Its defo. a 1978 Celica ( rare for that time) : shape of rear screen/tailgate and C pillar is the giveaway plus the shape of the waistline. It's got small bumpers as only the US ones had big plastic bumpers due to federal crash test legislation ( that's the reason later MG BGT's had them too... The MG convertibles had ridiculous huge roll hoops for the same reason)
