It was on a photograph of a local pub taken circa. 1978.

I have an idea but would like your thoughts.

Definitely not an interceptor, wrong rear window and wrong vent potion on the side

Def not a crapi - my first thought was a Monza, though it might be a Datsun?

Its a 1978 Monza GSE.

Look at the rear side window, its angular not curved like all the other cars mentioned.

Inset window divider

Side trim running across doors in the right place

Silver wheels with black paint

Rear wiper

Car looks shorter due to angle

But the reversing lights are in the wrong place in the cluster.

Obviously, the only really important issue here is, what does the car self-identify as?

Might look like a Monza to us but wishes to be treated as an Isetta

Pretty certain it's an Opel Monza, although it could be an Audi 100 Coupe.

Hmm actually, i'm now leaning to a 1978 Celica GT (as above but thats a later 80's model)

Rover 3500 SD1?

Less exotic than the suggestions above, but a lot more of them about.

I'm going left field here with a Matra-Simca Bagheera. Or it was the instaneous name that came to my mind when I first saw the pic in the OP.

i would normally at this point insert a picture of the Matra for your convenience, but I can no longer be arsed to fight trying to post a pic on here with an iPad device, it may work now and be hunky dory easy least but my last attempt a few weeks ago was in the realms of frustration that only BT and SSE have attained.

anyway, Matra Simca Bagheera. You heard it here first . Smiley emoji, my keyboard is now playing up

alpine was what I meant.  Fuego was a bit later IIRC.

The baghera was a fave of mine - IIRC 3 seats across the front?  But its not that

Celica is a good shout, I was thinking Honda Accord, but I think the wiper is the wrong way round.

The celicas pictured have painted bumpers. I can only remember chrome ones which might have been a UK thing. Th OP picture appears to have chrome bumpers.

Its defo. a 1978 Celica ( rare for that time) : shape of rear screen/tailgate and C pillar is the giveaway plus the shape of the waistline. It's got small bumpers as only the US ones had big plastic bumpers due to federal crash test legislation ( that's the reason later MG BGT's had them too... The MG convertibles had ridiculous huge roll hoops for the same reason)
