My wife unfortunately lost her job last October, made redundant. Was looking for work but then Covid!

I’m covering all the bills with my salary but consequently we have little or no money for fun things.

She’s not had much success seeking work so far and it’s getting her down.

It’s her birthday next week, hit me up with ideas of fun things to do to cheer her up or make her feel special that cost little or no money.

I have 2 girls age 9 and 4 who would love to be involved.

Thanks.

Old school tea party/picnic; even if it's in the garden/outside with a blanket, cushions, handpicked flowers.
Go go 'blackberrying' and pick fresh fruit. Homemade baking that the girls can do.

Get the kids to make her a book of vouchers for tasks / treats that she can cash in.

Breakfast in bed, foot rubs...basically anything that you or the kids can do for her that she'll enjoy or will make her life easier.

Obvious shizzle you're probably thinking of already...make her a cake, breakfast in bed, cook a special dinner with fancy tablecloth and candles and stuff, splash out seven or eight quid on a bottle of something fizzy, make her a birthday card.

Go out for the day somewhere countryside-y, make and take a picnic.

Have the girls put together their own little 'happy birthday mummy' song and dance routine; it'll be hilariously crap, and your Mrs can video it and play it back when she's feeling rubbish to cheer herself up.

There's a relevant Onion story I could link to, but might get banned.

Let's just say it's reminiscent of the Gov't's current restaurant half-price offer scheme.

Thanks guys.

Btw this was not a thinly veiled request for cash, it was just a bit of background info for our situation.

Although we’re a bit short of cash we’re not destitute and all the bills are covered. There’s a million more deserving cases than ours.

Thanks for the offers though, on here and on the DMs.

Treasure hunt, each location containing a tiny gift and a note describing a memory which sums up why you love her. Clues could be linked to the memory.

Well it's impossible to recommend since we don't know her. I mean, my wife likes to forget about everything so a day on her own (or with just me) reading books or playing video games uninterrupted is perfect for her. People appreciate it when people really understand them, which is why the thing that cheers them up is so personal.

Birthday picnic with some bucks fizz - make it a bit special. I expect the girls will love a picnic.

Or bake afternoon tea with the girls for her?

This^^ and the picnic.
Our kids would do 'a show 'for their mum's birthday, great fun.
You could also do a 'blast from the past' music mix and let the kids choose some old photos to go with it.

Throw the circuit breaker have a powercut day.

Break out the parlour games.

I can vividly remember how much fun they were as a tiny kid. The adventure is for the girls really but it removes distraction. Of course in those days it was real...

For my wife's birthday at the beginning of lockdown, I got some box picture frames and our 10 yr old girls made personalised art for her just using things we found in our craft box and a printer. In total the cost was <£10 for two. (Ignore the other bits in the middle, that's more of their self made art 🙂 )

A small box of proper chocolates.
A walk in the countryside with picnic.
Family bike ride to a hill and just sit and look at the view, ice cream after.
A lie in.
Get her favourite film out and have a nice night in with a take a way.
A plant.
Flowering shrub or plant in a pot which will flower every year (these are cheap at the end of the season).

I'm not sure spending the day watching his wife shaving STW volunteers is quite what the OP had in mind.

How about the work front? What is she looking for? STW knows everything they probably know about jobs too.

She could generate money by selling your bikes?

Love johndoh’s gifts.

Picnic wins. You’ve got to buy food anyway, eat it somewhere nice.

Get the girls to make cards in advance.

Breakfast/cup of tea in bed handed over by daughters with the handmade cards.

Get the girls to make/bake something foodie so that, if the weather is nice (i.e. not horrible), a family picnic somewhere pleasant, but not everyday ie. hilltop, country park, beach, river-side etc.

Later you have a fake-away (assuming you are OK with the re-heating/cooking part) and a movie night in based on your wife/daughters sort of movie choice. Check the local charity shops and eBay if you have time as DVD's can be very cheap. Microwave popcorn and other snacks FTW.

Alternative ending; Candlelit Board game night with nibbles, but the age range might make that more of a challenge as 4 and 9 is a big gap age wise for a boardgames.Once again, charity shops often have cheap boardgames.

The promise of free cups of tea (as in made on demand with no expectation of quid pro quo) for life gives pleasure years nay decades later and will never be forgotten. I find.

What about making her a video - either a montage of clips or selection of photos to a favourite song of hers? Easy to do with a tablet or PC with fairly basic software.

'Collect' a pod or two of hollyhock seeds with your daughters. Present the seeds as a present and your wife can, with the assistance of the girls, germinate, pot and plant them. Who's not cheered by a hollyhock? Picnic in the countryside? My Mrs just suggested an afternoon in bed with a bottle of wine (but difficult with the kids). I remember gestures and events more than 'things'.
