Hi folks

The Woody family is planning a holiday for half-term and are keen to go to Scotland (to see some ancient relatives in Glasgow but then head further north). We’d like to go somewhere where we can do outdoors activities. The obvious will be walking and biking but also keen to do other outdoorsy things (fires, whittling, climbing, rafting etc the sort of stuff 11 year old boys like to do)

I guess it’s not the right time of year but keen to get ideas / inspiration if anyone has found a gem

Ta
Woody

Can only really recommend my old area, Dunkeld, lots of walks and biking there, not far from Loch Tay for water sports, Aberfeldy is even closer and they do white water rafting and loads more. You can also go for a wander up Schiehallion if you enjoy a bit of a walk 😁

Feb 1/2.term? Check forecast MWIS to get an idea.of what it's doing on the hills that'll inform you better of what is sensible.

Perthshire is nice with lots to do.

A lot of tourist activity providers only operate Easter to October.

February on the hills (and glens) is winter.

Dunkeld is a good call, with forests and hills, good riding and walking.

Try Beyond Adventure for all sorts of activities, particularly paddlesports. They're in Aberfeldy, just up the road from Dunkeld.

Thanks all

I was thinking about the Forestry Commission (well on FC land if you know what I mean) cabins on Loch Lomond but it doesn’t look like an awful lot of activity going on (paddleboarding rafting etc) as out of season.

Further north in Moray there’s ACE adventures who do rafting on the Findhorn

Not Highlands, but we've been to Galloway in winter before. Not very much happening at all.
Fine for a short quiet break, but rubbish for activities.

As already mentioned, lots of areas almost close down during February up to Easter. However, there's the possibility of skiing/sledging if you head for the Cairngorms and you'll likely find more options for other activities there too.

Ice rink in Aviemore.

Landmark Forest Park in Carrbridge.

Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie.

Might be a bit cold for rafting, unless you've full drysuits for the whole family. Lochs are currently around 1-3C.

Loads of biking tracks of all abilities though.
