Ideas for revising my 21st birthday present

When I turned 21 I was gifted a fairly hefty gold chain necklace by my mum. When she’d asked me what I’d like I’d said that I’d like something timeless that wouldn’t age.

I wore it every day for a few years. But the current Mrs Reeksy isn’t a fan, and it’s a bit Del Boy to be fair.

… so it’s been in a box for the best part of 20 years now. It occurs to me that’s pretty pointless so I thought maybe I should do something with it. I’m not really a jewellery person, so having it remade into something else probably isn’t worth doing.

Obviously gold always fetches money so I’m not averse to selling it and getting something else (in consultation with Mum, as she will understand the practical perspective).

Any ideas? It’s around 45g of 9ct gold.

So around £700? You could get 3/4 of a fox suspension fork or a complete on one bootzipper

That's nearly £800, let your imagination run riot. Me I'd put it towards a watch or something.

@reeksy - are you me? That's what I got.

When I stopped wearing it I noticed I had a feint bald patch in my chest hair where the chain used to be.

🤦

@ElShalimo that's funny.

@rocketdog not really long-lasting enough although titanium frames last a long time I guess..

@oldenough my imagination is the problem - that's why I came here! I don't even wear the watches I own... too much like jewellery.

I’m not sure about the revising 21 presents thing.

It must have been an 80’s thing because I vaguely remember being asked if I wanted one for some birthday and er declined it, probably for the money or something for a computer.

The outcome of this being I have nothing nostalgic to show for that period of time, even if you don’t wear it at this moment you always have that warm feeling when you open the box and remember the good times.

(Probably even more the older you get and don’t have the luxury of old parents)

I suppose it’s that whole sentimental value thang.

Bracelet and then sell the remainder and buy something nice that you will use.

I'm with DudeofDoom. I got a signet ring 20+ years ago that I wore for about 6 months. I could sell it but my Dad would be distraught - even though he wouldn't tell me he was...

Agree with others - my grandma bought me a gold sovereign ring for my 18th - wore it for a few years and has since sat in a drawer for nearly 30 years - probably won’t wear it again but I still like to look at it and think of my grandma

Unless you're short of cash, gotta keep it or preferably get it melted down and made into something else.

The roller boots would be even less useful than the necklace tbh.

The rest I like though.
Perhaps a Walkman with the orange headphones.
Socks to go with wrist bands?

Or to paraphrase the traditional STW C&H suggestion, perhaps a tart of some description?

I got a gold chain for my 21st too.

Still wear mine everyday, I forget it's there and it feels odd if it's not on (I occassionally take it off if I'm going to a gig).

Or if you don't like jewelry does Mrs Reeksy or any smaller Reeksies that might? Doesn't necessarily have to be that chain you could part ex it for something someone else in the family would like to wear on bling days.

Bracelet I wouldn't wear either... nice idea though.

And i'm not sure about sharing the love. Mrs Reeksy isn't too blingy, and the kids are probably too young to be trusted with decent stuff yet.

Art is a really good idea! That's definitely worth thinking about. I could even go shopping with her for the right piece next time she's in Oz.

Art sounds like the best idea from the above. That or start wearing it again and become an old skool b-boy!

A proper jeweller could melt it down and make a piece of art with the gold?

Melt it down - solid gold personalised headset top cap.

My parents bought me a personalised reg plate for my 21st. Not something I’d ever buy myself.

Its gold, it will always be valuable - just keep it for a rainy day.

I inherited a gold sov from my dad, he never wore it of course but someone gave it to him because money comes and goes, if everything else fails you will have that gold to cash in and save a life.

Just put it back in the box unless you are struggling to eat. Spend your earnings on bikes and watches.

yup, start a treasure chest. get some rubies and dubloons to go with it.

My dad was a photograhy lecturer, and HIS dad was quite into pottering with making jewelry in his later life.
Apparently, they recovered the silver off the buckets and buckets of photography waste the college produced (film, and chemicals pressumably) which my grandfather melted down and made into two solid silver mice (which were mouse sized) using lost wax process. I remember seeing it once and pressumably its in a box somewhere, Heavy pieces of metal.
pressumably worthless without a hallmark indicating its grade?

Flog it and buy a decent watch as a keeper. If you look in the Watches N+1 thread there's always inspiration, and they're not all Rolex Oysters/Lobsters.
Useable, good-looking, and no Del-Boy vibes. WNTL?

The purity can be assessed pretty easily. A jeweller can't sell to the public without a hallmark, but they will happily buy it off you without a hallmark.

I got a pen for my 21st.

Still in use occasionally

I bet someone could make your gold into a pen.
