You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My oldest (aged 5) likes watching the various vids on youtube that folk have made using their toys as the stars..
He's now quite into setting up his toys and acting out his own film scenes so I'm thinking of getting him a camera for xmas so he can record his 'work'.. He's a pretty calm methodical kid and fairly savvy with tech..
The stuff available that's aimed at small kids all seems really shoddy, so I'm wondering if maybe one of those bargain go-pro copies or something similar might be a better long term investment (not that I'd ever borrow it myself or anything, honest guv')..
Are they pretty straightforward and user friendly..?
You'd have to pick one up second hand but I really like my Kodak ZX1. Really easy to use, decent quality video, screen for setting up shots, tough enough to chuck in my climbing bag and only about £40. Plus mine's a charming hot pink colour...
How about an actual GoPro for #95

basic GoPro hero for £99 should do it, and you could "borrow" it when he's finished using it.
Older gopro plus the LCD back should do nicely. Sure I've seen a lens modification somewhere to reduce the fisheye too.

What advantage would a go pro with an add on screen and some screwing about to fix the fish eye have over a cheap HD camcorder that makes it worth three times the price?
I was thinking about the camera being talked about in this thread
We've just bought a Sony digital camera on Tesco direct with club card point for our son. The video quality is good enough to do the job I would think, unless you want extra features.
As per Yunki's ref to the SJ4000 thread, my plan was to get one and see how good the camera is both on the trails and out n about doing family stuff. The former is far better than expected so I now just need to test the latter. Should be fine I reckon. Will probably let the little fella have a play too - the plan was always to give him a mounting kit to either carry or use on his bike anyway.
Perhaps not great for capturing audio at distance. Nor is it the most durable object (even in case), but I reckon at the price (£80+ including spare battery + 1-3 day UK delivery + SD card of choice) and you're onto a winner.
My eldest just got one of these for his 5th birthday:

It's probably not what you were thinking of but he absolutely loves it. It takes stills, video, and voice recordings. Has other bits too, some games I think (I haven't had a chance to get close to it yet).
I got one of my daughters one of these a couple of years back (previous model): http://www.amazon.co.uk/VIVITAR-DVR508NHD-PNK-pink-digital-camcorder/dp/B00Q21GLWW/ref=sr_1_3?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1416923074&sr=1-3&keywords=vivitar+camcorder
A lot cheaper than a GoPro, and she was very happy with it, although the SJ4000 does look a bit of a bargain. She only stopped using it as she's now got a phone which is always with her...
