To be fair, the Catholic church has had a lot longer to build up the number of deaths it's responsible for than Hitler. I think that Hitler's pace of excecution far outstripped them.

The belief that having sex with a virgin can cure hiv/aids may have a bit more to do with it.And I don't think you can lay that one at their door.

You are ignoring two important things.
Firstly that the Catholic church condemns the use of condoms within marriage which means one partner often goes on to infect the other and secondly that children are often born with the disease.

So what you are saying surfer; is that somebody in the marriage is playing away,i.e commiting adultery,(which is kind of one of the big no-no's) but still respects the Pope's edicts on condoms? I can see a bit of a flaw with your line of thinking there...

No I am not saying that, I will explain in simpler terms.

If one partner has Aids either through being one of the 70% of orphans in Zimbabwe who have inherited the disease from their mother or if one partner has in the past contracted the disease through sex or intravenous drug use then that is how they become HIV positive.

No,as much as you like to try and patronize,I understood what you said; my point was that if somebody was having lots of partners then they were unlikely to be paying close attention to what the Catholic Church would like them to do. The examples you list above,sex and intravenous drug use can hardly be laid at the Pope's door.BTW condoms are very difficult to actually get hold of in Africa.We as a school sponsor a refuge in Rwanda,and I have just been to confirm this with the guy in charge.He says he takes piles of them with him,and he suspects they end up on the black market.

What a moronic thing to say. If people stuck to only having sex inside marriage then AIDS would very quickly all but disappear. While the Catholic church does a lot I don't like (and I'm not Catholic) this is a very sensible stance to take. The big problem is education.

While everyone is entitled to there opinion why is it that Catholicism which is a minority religion in the UK is deemed fair game in morons tirades? If your Protestant then your religion is heavily based on Catholicism! Yes the catholic church is far from perfect but what religion is?

Read what I wrote above. Aids in Sub Saharan Africa wont be dying out anytime soon and if you think it is down to sex outside of marriage then I think it is you that needs to be better informed.

TBH I would not like to punch him... I think the Catholic position on condom use [ and abstenence per se] are not that effective in preventing babies /the spread of AIDS but I can see their point of view. If we could convince people - and we cannot- it would be totally effective. It is hugely unrealistic to expect it to work though.
Duckman has a point here, there are many factors at work in the African AIDS problem and to blame the Pope/Christianity is a tad hysterical. I would blame a lack of education first as plenty of Christian countries in the West are not similiarily affected even very Catholic ones like Spain, Italy and Ireland.

imo people will have sex whether they think its a good idea or not. i had sex with my ex, which i thought was a bad idea (but it was damn good). but if people are feeling dissuaded abot using a condom, they're lesws likely to, despite still having sex.

It appears your understanding of the spread of aids is related to “playing away” which I think summarises your Christian approach to the problem. I explained that there are several ways that the disease is spread.

However you shouldn’t take the view that because the Catholic churches teachings are not responsible for Aids and its wholesale spread that his teaching are not disgraceful and wicked and responsible to some degree. SA is now increasingly trying to encourage celibacy, and discourage forced marriages - which by their nature include an element of rape.

However, at no point have I limited my reasons for the spread of Aids to people having sex outside of wedlock.I used it as the example that somebody who was cheating on a partner was unlikely to be paying much attention to what the Pope has to say on contraception.Feel free to re-read my posts and then pick them apart to support your rants,that last one was a beaut!
