I'm a firm believer that no man over forty should wear a t-shirt with any kind of print on the front (or back). Old Guys Do Not Rule.

So, I'm looking for a plain white (or natural cotton colour), nicely fitted (but not skinny), decent quality, t-shirt. I've tried some from Uniqlo but they're really nosey.

Where might a gentleman source such a garment?

It sounds like the only person who is going to see it is your mum.

Ask her.

So, I recently went through this after losing a lot of weight and having to buy new clothes. I went to a bunch of different shops looking at plain white, grey and black t-shirts. My favourite by far were Gap Stretch V-neck T-Shirts. I think they do 3 for £20 or something.

These, brilliant. Looks like you'll need to get them in store though.

+1 for Sunspel.
Also consider John Smedley - full price can be speedy but they also have an outlet; Crombie (NOT Abercrombie) do a very limited range of block colours inc white but they have suspended all business at present.

See, you're stuck.
You're at an awkward age where you feel you need to dress in an appropriate way. Not too young, not yet ready for old age. Your dislike of T shirts with slogans is a revealing sign; it reveals an anxiety, a troubling distance betwixt your youth and the years yet to come.

You need to start wearing shorts.
All the time.

In addition, you would do well to learn the art of not giving a ****; a life skill which takes years to master.

Fair play to ya!

If you're going to buy any T shirts, get black ones, and don't discount supermarket clothing. Sainsburys and Tesco do a good range in hard wearing stuff for not much.

WooHaa! This is the answer to eternal youth.

This is so true; it's just liberating!

Nah, this boxy number will be tucked right into those cargo pants. Possibly accompanied by some sort of 'approach' shoe I'm going to stab at a pair of Merrells.

Looking good!

Yeah, pretty much most of nearly 66 years, and counting.
Currently wearing a pair of black Route One cargo shorts, and a black tee shirt bearing the phrase ‘SAME AS IT EVER WAS’ in large white letters.
At forty-odd years of age, one would think a man had gone well past the point of giving a shit what anybody else thinks, but maybe that’s just me; my mum stopped buying my clothes for me after I left school.

I agree, but then you spoil the effect somewhat with this nugget

black Route One cargo shorts

Now, in the context of not giving any of the ****s, "shorts" would've sufficed, but here you are; being particular to tell us the colour and manufacturer of your shorts, indicating that in reality, you care v much what other people think...

But still, no v neck tees. No one wants to look like Simon Cowell. (including Simon Cowell)

Fixed it for you:

Back to the original discussion, I've always found the fitted Hanes ones from eBay to be excellent - especially at under 6 quid delivered.

Loads, how long have you got?

I'm a bit bemused why people seem to think that I care about what others think about what I wear. I'd have thought that the fact that I posted a question that was certain to bring ridicule would be evidence enough to the contrary.

Anyhoo, some good suggestions, thanks.

I think you've mixed up your insults here, old chap.

You appear to insinuate that someone whose mum buys their clothes past childhood cares what other people think. However, people who don't choose their own clothes must not, by definition, care what people think. Or they would want to have some input into the process.

Indeed I therefore put it to you that, in choosing your own Route One cargo shorts and wittily sloganed t-shirts, you do, in fact, care too much what other people think.

You could perhaps prove me wrong, by allowing the denizens of STW to choose your clothes from here on.

Not sure how anyone, at least any ‘bloke’ can where white? Even though most of my work is at a desk and I rarely do any work (as in job etc) that can make me dirty, I always seem an hour or two away (or from) from something oily, some vegetation and or dirt etc..
When I see white clothes I think that must be one careful person who avoids the real world and hands over: cars, bikes, dogs, boats, aeroplanes, painting, fixing/mending, fuelling up, cleaning the house, workshop stuff, simple servicing, gardening etc.. to someone else - just ‘my own thoughts’. Even an office visit day in London and I can kill a light coloured shirt. Probably wrong as I’m sure Mr McMooter and Mr Flasheart and many other ‘blokes’ regularly wear white/light coloured shirts...?
Now a dark coloured T shirt or polo shirt I understand.
Answer to the question.. Howies t shirts work well.

Out of curiosity did you try google? I just googled white t shirt and believe there were a lot of options in the results. From £1.74 cheapos to £30+ branded ones. What other colours are willing to accept? Would you be offended at the idea of off white? Or cream or a very light grey?
Like others have said, white doesn’t work too well for me as they just end up dirty all the time!

I hate that 'Old guys rule' stuff because it's kin true. They should add on how the old guys fleece younger people by 'landlords, bosses and austerity.....'
Uniqlo supima
Among my T shirts that have lasted ages are a Singletrack one, a PS one and I've some Mambo stuff from the early 90s which was superb quality. I find cheap(er) T shirts wash out badly and are a false economy.

Indeed I did, but as you found there are many options. As things like sizing, fit, quality etc vary widely, I thought I'd seek personal recommendations, rather than going with the lottery of a picking a search result.

I've ordered some Rapanui stuff.

@doris5000 (or @IHN of course)

Looking at Rapanui and liking it, but the sizing seems a bit odd.

I'm a medium with Tshirts everywhere....yet at Rapanui, i would appear to be large.

Do they do something others don't? Or should I just trust my instinct and go for the normal medium?

ta!

I'm 6ft but with about a 37" chest.

I've got a Medium t shirt from RapaNui, which I find to be slightly too large in the chest. I'd also prefer it if it was an inch longer in the body, too.

But this is the issue I generally have with all clothes. I can either have long enough sleeves/body or a good fit around the chest, but not both!

It is odd that the 'dont care what they look like' demographic (at least in middle aged men) always seem to congregate to one of two very distinct and repeatable looks.

I've got 2 lovely merino t shirts from go outdoors. A nice dark blue/teal colour that seems to go with any trousers - as in, its light enough to not clash with black, and not so bluey that it looks silly with jeans.

No branding of any kind, fit my 6ft, wide shoulder and borderline healthy weight / over weight frame perfectly.

MY main objection with white is unless you have a full brood of kids in school uniform (or have to wear white for work) there is no way of generating enough white clothing for a white only wash. They look grey and miserable in no time when doing a mixed wash.

Looking at Rapanui

I've been a bit disappointed with Rapanui, t shirts aren't particularly great imo. Mine have wore out in no time. I've also had boxers that the quality of is pretty poor. Really wanted to like the company and admire their ethics but it's no use being environmentally friendly if your stuff is prematurely fit for the (recycling)bin.

Someone also mentioned gap stretch, I find these get pongy very quickly for some reason.

I'd second the Uniqlo ones and if you are looking for something longlasting I have carhartt t shirts that I will probably be able to hand down to my kids.

I think that on this thread there's confusion of, but an important distinction between, "I don't care what I look like" and "I care what I look like, but I don't care what others think about it".
