Clarence asked him if he could fly.

That was an odd way to remember that I’ve read the book. Looking forward to this

That was an odd way to remember that I’ve read the book.

The bottom half of the Internet is predictably awash with people bitching about how different it is from the original.  The "original" is the book and this looks a lot closer to the book than the Arnie movie which shared a title and little else.

It's a little bit cheeky to be claiming to be a Stephen King movie though.  The Running Man was written by King but published under the name Richard Bachman.  The story goes variously that publishers of the day only allowed one book per author per year, and King wanted to see if he could still sell books without relying on his name as a brand.

At some point it flipped over to being a Stephen King novel

I loved the book as a kid, I always envisaged a computer game based on it, then, to please Drac, Robocop 3 the video game came and that was similar in my mind as how to do it.   It would be awesome to see a Running Man game based on GTA.

Looking forward to seeing what Edgar does with it.

Dead or alive, you're coming with me 😉

Another here who loved the book and hated the Arnie film. This does look like it might be fun. Ohh, and Stephen King has been promoting the trailer on Bsky, so I take that as he is happy with it too.

Oh, and, if you want a film more similar to the book, try and track down Film4's "Series 7: The Contenders."

You'd be better buying The Bachman Books – Running Man is just a short story (included in the book) so you get three others to read too.

Oh, did it?

I read it as part of the Bachman Books.  I thought (at the time at least) that it was easily the strongest of the four.  I don't even remember now what the others were.

Oh yeah!

I only just stopped myself from correcting you when you first posted it by pointing out that they you'd mistakenly used a quote from Repo Man

Definitely a King novel on my Kindle account. Still can’t remember actually buying it - must’ve popped up on the cheap one day. Even the full set is now “The Bachman Books” by Stephen King

Pretty sure the original Bachman Books started with Rage, and I think that's been withdrawn now (it's about a school shooter, and King didn't want anyone else to quote it as inspiration). But it also has the very excellent The Long Walk, which I think is also shortly out as a film.

The Arnie Running Man was an awful cartoon rendering of what was a fantastic, gritty, very dark story - this looks pretty good!

Roadworks was a bit weird, but the bit where matey is tripping at a house party is great! 🙂

Looks like a lot of fun and Edgar Wright is always a win. MrsExplorer will be happy with a bit of Glen Powell eye candy too!
