Has anyone actually managed to get their iphone to regularly back up to the "iCloud"?
Mine always seems to have some sort of problem and won't back up either automatically or manually.
Am I missing something or is it just cack?
No problems here. Backup calender & contacts to iCloud. Can't backup apps or photo's as its limited to 5Gb.. I have way more than 5Gb of photos/apps!
I thought this thread was about beans.
😉

You can buy more space I believe.
Also surely it doesn't matter what size your apps are. They are all on the App Store anyway so don't need backing up. It should just be your personal app data that gets backed up.
Should've said app data, if you have memory map this can be quite big!

Ah yeah that's a flaw. I guess you could deselect Memory Map but I guess you probably do want that backed up.
Tell me about it. Migrating from mobileme to iCloud has been an utter nightmare, what with all the crippling software updates to my poor 3GS. Wish I wasn't such putty in Apple's hands yet no doubt I'll have to upgrade to a 4S, as per their evil plan. Damn their eyes.
It's a bit fiddly initially, but generally no issues here. My Mac, iPhone 4S and the iCloud website are all happily talking to each other, with the minor exception that birthdays aren't showing on the iCloud website, but I can live with that (they are still synced to my phone).
If you are struggling to get it set up, I found a quick google sorted most of my teething trouble.
I assume you have the most recent updates applied to your computer and iPhone?
Any specific issues? Which apps?
My contacts, calendar, bookmarks etc etc all sync automatically no problem but.....
under 'settings' 'icloud' 'storage and backup' - the option at the bottom to backup camera roll, accounts, docs, settings etc - does anyone use this or just sync by cable?
Also - my contacts - I have 2 versions the 'icloud' ones and 'on my phone' - can I merge these?
syncing by cloud and wifi here - no problems, but it seems video clips only sync by cable which is a pain.

Basically, running an iPhone 4S and MBP. All software is up to date. iCloud account is all set up.
I've disabled back up of my camera roll because it's so large, but selected mail/calander/contacts etc to be backed up.
When it's hooked up to wifi and charging, I was under the impression the back up was supposed to happen automatically - it doesn't.
When I go into the iCloud settings on my iPhone and try to back up manually, it just hangs and then doesn't back up.
It's showing that the last time it backed up was in early December, so it has obviously worked on occasion, just not as regularly as it should be.
No problems so far but only sync-ing a few things like contacts and new photos. iPhone 4, iPad1, Mac Book, Mac Mini. We back up mobile data to the Mac Mini and not iCloud and use the cable for major updates at least once a week.
FWIW 5 years ago the only Apple products we had were iPods, now whole family (5 people) is Apple for computing with only 1 Windows desktop which is rarely switched on. 3 iPhones and others will convert when contracts roll over. It's a slippery slope but the products really do work better.
Mine did work fine, then just started complaining about errors, so I've just disabled it as everything of importance syncs to Exchange. So I'll just loose photos, and and decent ones I'll have uploaded to FB etc.
i cant seem to understand this icloud stuff...my wife & i have an iphone4. macbook in the flat and we share itunes account and icloud (currently). The idea being we have the same contacts and same calendar.
in the beginning that worked, but now i add a contact and only i see it. she adds one and we both do... calendar is ok, both add stuff, both see it..
any ideas?
Hi Scotia,
Sorry to steal you away from this thread however could you look at my old thread which I've since updated and see if you can identify why the coffee machine is broken?
Thanks!
I use post-it notes on the fridge.
Works really well, setting it up was like SUPER EASY.
Couple of points of the top of my head:-
Make sure syncing of address book, calendar etc is SWITCHED OFF in the iPhone settings in iTunes - you don't want to be syncing things through your computer if you have turned on iCloud syncing, as you'll get everything duplicated.
In Address Book and calendar, make sure you hide the "On Your Mac" stuff, and only have the "iCloud" stuff visible, or you'll see duplicates of everything all over the place. Do you use Mail on your mac too? You might wish to additionally tinker with settings there as notes etc go through your me.com mail account I believe.
