In may its dead quiet because tourist season proper doesnt start until June.

This does mean though some attractions are not open!

For hiking hire car is probably best, lots of interesting places to go, well worth a drive around the penisular where Snæfellsjökull National Park is. Lots of good walks and sights there.

Also there was a nice walk near Geothermal park Hverasvæðið up beside a geothermal stream so you can go for a paddle near the top. Or you can get pony ride up for a lazy day. The shop at start/end has excellent cakes.

National bus service. If they can’t get there, you aren’t getting there in a hire car...

It's generally expensive. Most places take cards, and cash is cheaper overall from an ATM with a debit card compared to getting Krona in the UK. Best value supermarkets are "Bonus" - big pink pig on the sign. If you're on a budget, a good hostel in Reykjavik is https://www.hostel.is/hostels/reykjavik-city-hi-hostel, next to the big swimming pool.<cite class="iUh30">

I was there in September and there were lots of hired vans with pop-up tent platforms on the roof rack.

The Icelanders were without exception friendly and helpful.

We were there in July. We hired a pickup truck with pop tent on the back.

Main takeaways were;

Outrageously expensive - we ate out once for lunch - two soups & two instant coffees cost £42!  A 2 hour whale watching trip on a boat was £100 each etc - we cooked our own meals, ate like students and camped every night but still spent circa £1,500 each including truck hire over the 7 days.

On the last day it was appreciably warmer (9'c) than the rest of the time - it still never got into double digits during our week there.

It is very windy, with a raw wind.

There were coach loads of Americans

The landscape was spectacular

Campsites with hot tubs were ace

Campsites seemed not to have any showers.

Overall we got some brilliant photographs and the landscape is otherworldly - in some places you might have well been on Mars. However we are in no rush to head back
