Mrs BigJohn and I found ourselves with a few days free next week so we impulsively booked flights to Ibiza.

We've no idea what to do or where to stay. Normally our trips are based around windsurfing and/or immersing ourselves in Asian experience, but neither is on the cards here.

We're not going to be awake when the big clubs are open, we'd prefer not to hire a car, we're probably going to hire some bikes one or two days and we'd like to have a room with somewhere to relax outside and be near to bars/restaurants.

So, ideas please on where to stay and what to do.

We stayed at hotel maritime, Ibiza town.  Everything's walkable, we took our bikes which they stored in the laundry room, or hire them.  C 100 per night.

I m on mainland Spain atm, lovely sunny weather, beaches are deserted, sea is warm, beach bars are open.  I d get a ferry to formentera, cycle round the beaches, a few beer stops.

Sorry I can't help you, but we looked at Ibiza over the summer (as the flights were cheap), but the accommodation costs were astronomical. We got a huge high-spec beach-front three-bed apartment with shared use of a pool (nr Estepona on the mainland) for less than we would have paid for an absolute hovel in Ibiza (AirBnB). I guess the prices might not be quite so bad when it isn't high season though (and perhaps the prices were hiked if there was some event on)?

We've been going Ibiza since our late 30's (now in our 50's) and prefer it up near Sant Miguel towards the north of the island. I'd get a hire car.

Spend a day chilling in the outdoor spa @ at Hacienda na Xamena

Drum the sunset down at Benirras beach.

There's an awesome antiques shop/industrial unit on the road out of Ibiza town heading towards Sant Miguel that is always worth checking out for the antique kitsch of the island.

There was a nice restaurant in Sant Miguel - La Luna Nell Otto (just googled it).

Love the place and had some great holidays there with family and friends.

You’d like the Benirras beach drummer sunset thing.  Old town is really nice place, with a good castle.

My mates always stay at Pikes, it sounds fun but I don't think it would mix too well with cycling the next day...

Did quite a bit of road riding on a hired fast road bike in the summer on family hol staying in port de sant miquel. It was excellent but had to go out very early due to heat. I guess October should be much cooler.

From south to north is not really that long of a ride. North and east towards coast were the best for scenary IMO

North east corner is lovely and some nice riding, although some stunning mtb riding on the west coast as well. I stayed near Santa Eulalia, not too far north of Ibiza town. The town itself is quite nice and a few bike shops in town, so don't think hire would be an issue. Wouldn't need a car but a nice base to explore by bike.

As mentioned, Formentera is a good shout. Can get electric scooter hire packages which includes the ferry over and you collect the bike once there, so no faffing about with it on the ferry. Didn't do it ourselves but this company was good when we used them for quad hire.

Actually, quad bike was also a nice way to see the island.

Santa eulalia is lovely, we cycled there from Ibiza town on off road tracks, got the route from tourist office.  We had planned to explore the far north of island, but had such a lovely lunch is Santa eulalia, that was the day gone.  Beautiful beach for swimming in so take goggles.

The only bad bit of Ibiza town was the English strip, every Spanish resort has it, unless that's what you want of course.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. As we're arriving late and only have a few days we booked a nice looking apartment in Ibiza town, close to the beach and not too far from Dalt Vila it seems.
Sadly this means we'll probably miss the Benirras drumming but I think I'd rather chew off my own foot than get involved with some hippyish connecting with primeval roots crap.
Roll on a bit of Balearic sundowner chilled grooves. To see if they match up to the Tarifa grooves we love so much.
