I had new boots and panties streaming on to my flip 3 cracking album but also very rude, almost had to turn it down a wee bit but i love the bass on it too much to do that

Ah, Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

Remember it well.

Another one that died too early.

Have you been hit by a rhythm stick? You may be entitled to sue for personal Ian Dury.

.

.

Sorry

Man was a bit of a genius and waaaaay ahead of his time.

Having probably the best backing band since the Blues Brothers didn't do him any harm either.

And neither did being an absolute arsehole of a human being. We need reminding that not all disabled people are grateful, passive saints.

Top bloke.

A reminder of what great musicians The Blockheads were in their prime.

His son is carrying on his legacy in fine style. If you’ve not listened to his last album, you really should.

listen to this track in particular, and it could only really be his son...

When I moved to London ,  he was always at the marquee ,watching bands. Very cool.

I remember being excited every time I saw him.

Watched "Sex and drugs and Rock n Roll" on the I player recently - very good imo.

As was Baxter Dury at Wilderness. 🙂

I bought New boots and panties when it came out. My dad banned it from the house and made me take it back. So I stashed it round my mates and listened to a taped copy. What memories .

Saw them back in the 1990s at some festival or other. Blew away pretty much every act, incredible band.

I went to see Wilko Johnson last week, a living legend with a fine new album of original material out. Anyway, he's got Norman Watt-Roy (ex Blockheads) on bass who plays with a style and energy that has to be seen to be believed. You can see and hear where the blockheads got their drive and intensity from.

Wilko Johnson live is like a force of nature. If you haven't watched the Julien Temple documentary about his impending death, and subsequent miraculous resurrection then you really need to. Essential viewing. Its one of the most life-affirming films you'll ever watch. Truly inspiring stuff. I recorded it when it was on BBC4 and if I'm ever feeling a bit sorry for myself, I stick it on to give me a sense of perspective

Wilko also has Dylan Howe (son of Steve off of Yes) on drums, who is a fantastic drummer (just listen to his playing on that Spread It video above) and reasonably successful jazz musician in his own right. Wilko and Dylan are probably the worlds best rhythm section.

Dylan was on drums with Wilko last week. Interesting you class Wilko and Dylan as a rhythm section. I thought during the gig that they were exactly that...with Norman on lead bass. At one point, there was a problem with the drum kit and some needed swapping out, it was all done without stopping and Norman just covered for the missing drums with a bit more slap.

"Oh! Segovia"

One of those bands who's random lyrics pop-out of your head at the daftest moments.

Any band is only as good as it’s rhythm section.

”Hello, I’m Norman, I’m a ****.

Hello, I’m Charlie, I’m a Blacki...”.  😂😂😂

Or complete bellend.  Surely we don’t need to celebrate someone being a terrible human being?

Someone I send business to knew him quite well when they worked in the music industry. Drury was described as an unpleasant human being. A shame as the music he produced was good.

I always thought hist music was garbage to be honest. All attitude and no substance. Interesting maybe, but ultimately crap.

Plenty of artists can be unpleasant in one way or another. Doesn’t mean one can’t celebrate their skills as an artist. An inability to separate the two possibly says more about the person who’s criticising.

No, it isn’t crap. Quite the contrary.

I quite like some of his stuff*.  Happy to celebrate his music - just thought it was odd to promote his being an arse as a positive thing.

*Funnily enough after a thread about Wilko.

I was hoping for much better from that story. The only scrap of interest comes from it being about an unlikely interaction between two celebrities. Take the celebrity bit out of it and it's just two guys acting like tw**s.
