You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
TBH, I'm probably 15% annoyed at this...it's not the end of the world as we've space on our drive.. but it meand I need to keep shufling cars about to get in and out.
Last wednesday I sold my 'step daughter's' dead (blown engine) vw Bug. It DOES still drive, I guess, but was sold as a non runner.
Anyway.. someone came by fully aware of the situation, but wanted a project. He planned to drive it away at the weekend, which is fine as it's now his car..
He paid, v5 all transferred, but it's still sat on our drive!!
I'll give it till this weekend then tell him I'm going to aprk it on a nearby street. As it's untaxed and doesn't have a permit, it'll be an issue.
Bar doing this, anything else I can do to make him take it away??!!
Like i say..not the end of the world, but it's just odd behaviour!
DrP
Not knowing the legal side but I'd be hesitant to 'dump' it on the street (especially if it will get tickets) until you've got the confirmation letter from the DVLA that it's no longer your responsibility. After all, the buyer knows where you live and the last thing you want is a stand off on the door step with a fistfull of parking fines rammed down your throat!
(That wouldn't stop you give the buyer a few days notice that you are planning to park it up down the road anyway, though)
If he did the V% transfer online its instant - the email notification is the proof.
I'd do them the courtesy of letting them know but if your tight on room, I'd be moving it. Not your problem!
Sell it again and let the new owners fight it out.
Get a wheel clamp and start charging him £25/day for storage, clamp removed on payment. Simples 🙂
I don’t think I’d risk driving a car I didn’t own without the owners consent on a public road, especially knowing its not taxed and insured- for lost of reasons.
I would however consider setting him a deadline after which you’ll get a scrap man to lift it off your drive
Has it been total radio silence?
Could the buyer have gone under a bus?
Worse yet did he maybe fail to fully clear his new project with the SO?
I'd want to know for sure before popping it on the road to pick up parking tickets...
If you move it you will be driving without consent of the owner? Buyer reports you to police and it could get unpleasant.
Have you tried actually talking to him? I know it’s not the STW way, but in polite society it would be courteous to do so. Just give him a phone and ask when he’ll be there to pick it up. He probably never actually had any way of moving it but paid on the day to avoid losing out. I’d bet he’s scrabbling about trying to borrow a trailer from someone.
How long has it already sat there? Is another week really the end of the world? Remember Rule 1 applies to you as well.
Have you tried actually talking to him?
Stop trying to be reasonable. We need frozen sausages and the new owners address!
As there's a new Beverly Hills Cop film out...
Frozen sausage in the tail-pipe?
As above, it isn't yours to move and you'll potentially have insurance problems if you drive it without permission
Maybe he's going to do the work on your driveway 🙂
Have you tried actually talking to him?
To add more truth to this situation, but to detract from the fun...
Yeah, we've exchanged several messages and had a few phone calls since the sale. Apparently 'severe toothache' has prevented him collecting the car. For over a week...!
Like I say, I'm VERY unlikely to do anything mean or dodgy! But still...come get your car dude!
DrP
I'll swap it for a PS4, hold out yer hand!
I think if you move it then it is still your problem. Tax/insurance/mot I'm less sure about once parked, but parking fines are like speeding tickets, they're the responsibility of the person who was in charge of it. Legally I don't think you can do anything, if you move it onto the road then whilst taxing and insuring it is someone else responsibility, it would be you driving on the road, with no tax, insurance, MOT and without the owners permission.
Just phone them up and tell them they have to move it.
Arguably, if you were stopped while moving it onto the street, you could be done for theft (it's no longer yours), no tax and no insurance!!
It's your very own bug jam. Set up a hotdog stall!
As there’s a new Beverly Hills Cop film out…
Frozen sausage in the tail-pipe?
Dammit, it's a Beetle - if I'm doing 80s film references, surely it should be a Herbie goes Bananas in the tail-pipe.
Hang-on, that loses the STW call-backs...
Stuff it, I'm ill, that'll have to do.
Apparently ‘severe toothache’ has prevented him collecting the car. For over a week
Tell him if he comes and collects the car ASAP you'll write him a prescription for some really strong painkillers.
Just let him know it's an issue now and that if it isn't collected by 14/07 you'll be getting a scrap collector to remove it next week.
Tell him if he comes and collects the car ASAP you’ll write him a prescription for some really strong painkillers
Yeah, this. Mega painkillers ftw... and getting the car moved.
I’ll swap it for a PS4, hold out yer hand!
Add in a BMX and it's a deal..
DrP
Contact the buyer and ask if there's a problem. Let them know it's not been a cause of a problem so far but you'd rather it were gone. If that's not led to it going by Sunday, I'd Contact again and let them know it'll be moved to a scrap merchant if still there in one more week.
Give them another week if no feedback refund money and scrap car.
As there’s a new Beverly Hills Cop film out…
Frozen sausage in the tail-pipe?
That idea's bananas.
put mackerel in the glove box
Apparently ‘severe toothache’ has prevented him collecting the car. For over a week…!
Give him until 2.30
A week isn't too bad... I mean you've got the money... If it went on for a month I'd be getting irritated.
Am I the only one reading this and seeing a #humblebrag about the size of DrP's drive?

Why do you need to keep moving it? Surely just park it at the back and leave it there.
We've 2 EVs, which need charging, and I was too tight to pay for the 8m cable, so a car needs to be parked nearest the house to charge.
Plus the other bug that comes and goes.
Plus the guy keeps saying "I'll pick it up tomorrow" so I parked the (dead) bug at the front of the drive... With another car behind.
We needed access to the other car.
All the above reasons = a daily car shuffle
Honestly...my life is like that fox-chicken-grain puzzle sometimes..
DrP
Bet you wish you’d bought the big cable now ?
If we're wishing.... An EV charger cable isn't even registering in the top 100 right now ??
DrP
Beat(le)s the buyer of my TRP Spyres paying me over 2 weeks ago but despite various messages to them through here still not providing me a postage address.
Yeah just roll it.
Sounds like the buyer isn't quite ready and is scrambling for somewhere to put it. Or has realised that transport will be a pain in the hoop.
Tell him its on the street and you left the keys on the wheel while you are away on holiday.
Have sent a few more messages...complete radio silence for >36 hours 😀
What an odd situation!
DrP
Does sound a bit weird as he’s paid for it .I’d leave him a message telling him that it will be removed from your property by X date if not collected.
How did he pay? Is it possible he might try and recall the payment?
I must admit I'd simply have rolled it into the street to get it off my drive... SEP if something legal happens.
very strange..... maybe he's ill?
he paid via bank transfer at the time of sale...
I live in a cul de sac, so rolling it into the immediate street will be just as annoying, and p off the neighbours!
I'm in Hove, so I may actually just roll it into the sea...
DrP
Leave it long enough and the sea air will rust it into oblivion for you anyway DrP 🙂
rolling it into the immediate street will be just as annoying, and p off the neighbours!
Still SEP, it's not your car.
If you’re really concerned about the legal ramifications of driving it ten yards, push it there.
You're still in control of the vehicle, so no avoiding your responsibilities that way I'm afraid.
Collect within 10 days or I'll sell it again would be my take.
I can't sell again..I don't have the v5!
DrP
I’m in Hove, so I may actually just roll it into the sea…
At this glacial rate of pickup the sea might come to you.
Tell the new owner you're going to phone the council and say someone parked on your drive; get it towed away.
Shocking your ass like a faulty vibrator...
How far to the nearest road where you could leave it where it wouldn't be obviously pissing off any residents? 'push' it there and post the bloke the keys? IANAL
I’ve had similar - bulky item paid for and then not moved for ages - problem is it’s now their property and you are the caretaker (ie possibly liable if say you did roll it into the sea) - to deal with it you need a ‘charge’ (reasonable to a court) to off-set the cost - so for example you write via ebay (doesnt matter if they dont respond, you have it on record) that the car now needs to be removed and the removal quote is equal to or higher than the cost of the item and they have 2 weeks say to collect the car otherwise they will owe you money to cover the cost of removal etc - it worked for me but they did turn up in the dead of night on the last day.
hths
ahem - wrong thread, soz
Phoned him again just now.. reminded him if he doesn't get it by tomorrow I'll move it to the nearest road... Which is just at the end of my cul de sac...
He didn't seem too bothered about that...but did seem frustrated I want him to take his car away ??
Numpty!
DrP
There's some odd folk in this world...
I've had enough!
I told him I'd move it...and I have....
Parked on the road outside our close...
The car remains untaxed, and doesn't have a permit (which is fine today, but come Monday....).
He messaged me earlier saying he would "try to collect at 5pm"..
I told him I'm not worried anymore... He can take his time as it's not on my drive ?
DrP
Ha nice, like I say, I'd just tell him that the keys are in the post.
Assuming he'll need to come to you to get the key then you probably need to be slightly bothered as you'll be sitting in the house doing not a lot waiting...
5 steps ahead lafs....
Keys are hidden on the car somewhere. He knows where...
DrP
Is he definitely the one responsible for any fines, or could it be you, since you put it there?
BitD my old man sold his old car to a guy at work who then disappeared. We just held on to it and it was my learning hack until a Range Rover lost control in the snow and smacked it into a neighbours garden. My old man just kept winning with this car, sold it for good money, the insurance paid out good money, he then bought it off of them and we stripped it and sold all the parts.
About 10 years later he turned up as a Bristol City Councillor on TV. He never came back for his cash or car, odd people out there

Sorry, I've misled you...
The car just so happened to move there. I was out.
But it's not my car...no link to me...so I'm as confused as you....
DrP
So what happens when the car disappears but he claims he hasn't collected it. Someone could have found the keys and stolen it...

Still not the OP's car.

Aaaaand.... He's taken it!!!!
Nothing like being responsible for something (as opposed to ME being responsible) to make you crack on and sort it out!
DrP
How's his toothache..... any better?
