[Closed] I rescued a Tawny Owl today that was caught in barbed wire 🙁

I startled a barnowl under a bridge the other day. Flopped off it perch onto the mud gave me a dirty look and tried to fly off straight into a thistle with wings outstretched. Fortunately it soryed itself out and flew off. All i broad daylight.

I once 'ran over' a Barn owl. It was slumped in the middle of the road at night. As I approached it looked like a bin bag or similar so drove over it with my wheels either side.

It wasn't until I was passing over it I realised what it was. We stopped and luckily it was just dazed from its previous encounter, as we stopped a local walked past who knew of someone nearby who could help so we boxed it up and off it went.

I'm not sure if it was because it had had a knock, but it was very calm.

The Tawny went quite calm when it was talked to. It seemed to know that we were trying to help.

I recently had to secure one that had fallen down a neighbour's chimney. Everything you ever heard about the sharpness of their talons is true.

What a beautiful bird, hope it recovers. Largest thing I ever rescued was a young Moorhen that had swallowed a fishing maggot complete with hook, then got the residual fishing line tangled in undergrowth.

Crapped all over the jumper I wrapped it up in. 😆 You're brave tucking that inside your coat!

It had no chance if I didn't find it today, poor bugger strung up like that.

I thought it was dead at first. Got a couple of pix from distance and decided I wanted better picture. Climbed into the compound it was in (fence) and the bird started moving.

Then "A&E Owl 24 Hour Rescue" mode kicked in 😉

Years ago I was driving along and saw a kestrel dive down heading for something at the side of the road but instead of a mouse it bombed into the front wing of my Capri! Obviously I thought that was that for the poor thing so carried on my way. An hour later I came back the same way and saw the bird at the side of the road, still alive, A) despite hitting a ton of metal and B) surviving heavy traffic on an A road! I got out and stuffed it in my jacket and took it to the nearest vet. It was blinded in one eye so it was passed on to a bird sanctuary for breeding purposes. The lasting impression of it all was the impression it made in my front wing!

Well done you. I'm not sure as I'd have been that brave, unless it was properly docile. Having been to an owl sanctuary, well, all I can say is that I'm bloody glad I'm not a dormouse.

We have a few that roost in the trees at work. They are quite vocal during the day , I thought they were nocturnal .
Very occaisionally see them hunting in the feild on my way into work. We also have a very large Kestrel , lots of Buzzards and a few Kites in and around the farm .
No barn owls though , might stick a box up see if we can get one of them too.

That is alot of barbed wire , military ? Surprised not more stuff gets caught up tbh . Good for you for releasing it.

I did similarly with a buzzard that had struck a wire but with a far worse ending. It's broken wing bones had pierced through the skin.

The sanctuary humanely destroyed the bird but surprisingly let me keep it to show to my classes in school. They were impressed too, as was I. They are BIG birds.

2017 had been a really tough year for Owls. The cold and wet spring resulted in low numbers of chicks. Experts said the weather was to blame, quite simply "it was just too wet too woo"

Those pictures brought tears to my eyes. You can see the pain in its eyes even though they are closed.

Owl update:

Just spoke to the Oak & Furrows and the owl survived the night and it is with a specialist vet now.

Sustained damage to its shoulder area and the wing was serious lacerations.

It has a good chance of survival. However, if it makes it and it cant be returned to the wild as a healthy bird it will still have to be put down 🙁

Thats a bit sucky..:(

Bit unfair to stick one in a budgie cage , but outdoors in an aviary with a box.
Bit harsh to kill it , but then if it cannot hunt it will starve to death over winter anyway

It is with great regret that I have to report the owl has died 🙁

He/She passed away under anethestic, however the actual surgery went well and looked good up to that point.

At least it did'nt die strung up on barbed wire.

Quite a few owls in the local woods that I enjoy watching on night time walk with the dogs, the joystick exposure on max power doesn't seem to affect/scare them in the slightest

Tawney owls are my favourite birds. However please be aware that they are dangerous in the nesting season, thinking nothing of attacking a person near its owlets.

Definitely speak with a taxidermist about getting it stuffed, wings spread in a swooping pose and hang in your stairwell.
