Which smart phone should I get?
For internet, forum, twitter, camera, general phone and text use?
I phone 3gs 8gb for £35 a month 600 mins talk/ unlimited everything else - good deal or not?
What's out there better please?
Suggest you close the topic now and do a forum search 😉
Might as well ask "what's the best 5" trail bike?"
do some research on phones and you'll see why the iphone is useless compared to what HTC will sell you for pennies.
If the camera is important to you, and you're only looking at the iPhone 3 (not the new 4) then I'd say go with HTC, because the camera is definitely a weak point on the older iPhones.
In terms of deals, you might want to look at the O2 Simplicity deals and get the handset off eBay or similar.
I do wish people wouldn't say things like 'go with the HTC'.
HTC make lots of different phones:

Ok. Go with HTC Desire.
That better?

Absolutely. It's like comparing iPhones to Android phones; exactly which Android phone? It's an OS stuffed into a range of phones by several manufacturers, like WinMob phones. A review I read recently of an Android phone with an 8Mp camera was quite positive except for the camera which was very tricky to operate without camera shake and the performance was average at best. All phones have + and - points, you have to judge which outweighs the other. FWIW, I have a 3G, now replaced by a 4G, and while I loved the 3G, and used it constantly, by comparison to phones released more recently it is lacking somewhat. A 3Gs would be a much better choice, the camera is somewhat improved, and it's faster. Don't fall for large pixel counts indicating better picture results, 5Mp is optimum, and processing software as well. The old N95 had a 5Mp camera - it sucked big-time, utterly useless for taking even simple shots of stationary objects.
I like iphones because they are sooooo simple to use and the gui is the best to negotiate i find android too fussy. Awaits the iphone pitchforks. I do find it funny that iphone is the benchmark, i keep seeing iphone killer this and that etc the only thing that will kill an iphone is a flush down the lav 😉
Thanks for all the help, I think 😕
I just got an iphone 3gs 16gb free on 3 with 500 mins an unlimited texts and 3-3 calls and 1gb o internet for £30
I went for it over the htc desire ( which i could have had for £24 per month as i found it easier to use, the app store is better now and it just felt more intuitive to use.
Camera does everything i need it to, os4 is brilliant (multitasking etc)
Glad i got the iphone
But if i could have afforded the samsung galaxy s i would have had that like a shot!
I really wish someone would release the supposed 'iPhone killer', I have a 3GS but really really dislike Apple as a brand and would happily change but the iPhone is just better than everything else unfortunately...
If all you want is something that will do everything you want simply, stylishly and quickly, go for the iPhone. If you want to get more involved in the workings of it all, or have a pathalogical hatred of brands that move the game on and charge a premium, get something else, like one of these:
Htc desire is a massive phone though, I'd not want to carry that around in my pocket, my HTC hero is big enough

I think you just need to look around a bit more. I'm no apple hater (writing this on my iPad), but there are plenty of phones out there that I would suggest are better than the 3GS.
desire over 3Gs and definately 3G according to techradar

Its actually not that much bigger in dimensions. 5mm at most and that is all screen.
GF just got a Samsung Galaxy S. OMG it is big and bright and enormously fast. Going back to my hero's screen is like going back to a standard numberpad phone but the SGS really is too big to pocket.
I still like my Sense UI better.
Htc desire is a massive phone though
mmm comparing the two at the moment there isn't a lot of difference. I've got an htc desire so I say it's the best, but nothing to choose between them though. Only thing better about the htc is that most people say 'a what' if they ask what your phone is.
had an iphone and now have the HTC desire, imho the desire wins for having flash support, download skyfire web browser and it will play anything! they are pretty similar apart from that. Tthe app store for android is getting bigger + you can get apps from 1000's of other sites. The camera is very good with face tracking. In built google sat nav is great and free, it has guided me to some very remote spots!!! ive got around 500 pics, 300 songs and 10 full films on mine and it has tons of space left. Watching films on the large screen is actually pretty good. The phone as stock is OK but get the right apps and it is simply great. The web browser is fantastic and it automatically finds wifi spots. You also get the choice to choose which browser you want to use from all downloaded ones. Same with films, movies, clips, it asks which app you want to open the clip / film with. All in all a very clever phone, its not that big once you have had it a while! it really is very similar to the iphone, its just the clearer large screen and flash support gets my vote. And its due a 2.2 upgrade soon, so will just get better. Lastly I got the phone free £25 pm with 600 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited web. I think apple offered me 200 mins & texts for £30 or something daft
Some app recommendations
TVcatchup (watch most freeview channels live)
rockplayer
myplayer (bbc catch up TV & downloads)
mvideoplayer (plays films perfectly)
mixzing
compass
google maps
HTC Desire if you want a phone-better call quality but has a quiet speakerphone when compared to iphone3.
I know loads of ppl happy with their iphone 3 btw.
Personally I refuse to buy a 24 month contract and just buy a sim for 12 months on a better deal using current or buy a phone etc.
Htc desire is a massive phone though, I'd not want to carry that around in my pocket,
Pretty much identical in size to iPhone 3gs (I have 3 iPhones and a desire on my desk right now, so I just looked).
I think the iPhone 3gs is okay, although the software seems very plain and lacking in style compared to the HTC desire now. Just doesn't quite feel as modern somehow.

Spankmonkey I've never been able to get tvcatchup up to work on my desire, always get an experia ad then 'flash content not supported' error.
Gary, not sure why it would not work, ive had no issues at all. Try removing it and re-install ?
Is there not an HTC specific address for TV Catchup?
e.g. for iPhone there is http://iphone.tvcatchup.com/ (that obviously doesn't use Flash)
Try removing it and re-install ?
I thought you just used the website, is there an android app for tvcatchup, if there is I can't find it.
I thought Androids were, like, brilliant?
Palm?! (think 29er) as opposed to all those Orange 5's (Iphones) and Android Phones (Santa Cruz's) once you use one you'll like it and feel smug that no-one else quite gets what phone you have and the fact its actually better than the competition....
How much data would an hr on tv catchup use? especially on networks limiting you to 1gb-would see a lot on a tiny 4 inch screen? just use your laptop on wifi etc.
If Apple can fix iphone 4's released from the factory I would gladly get one.

What is it you think needs fixing from the factory? There's nothing on mine that doesn't work properly.
I wanted a palm pre but then the company went belly up and was taken over. Wouldn't buy one now as their app catalogue is tiny and no longer being expanded.
New fangled Samsung Galaxy S here with Android, really getting on with it and an increasing number of them are starting to appear at work.

That pic may have been relevant about 5 years ago, things have moved on a bit. Standard headphone jack here, plays all websites including those with flash yours doesn't play, plays more audio formats, plays more video formats, better camera for taking pics of the friends I haven't got, drag and drop or use one of numerous bits of software.
Simples?

Well a 4-inch screen held less than a foot away is probably a fair bit bigger than most tellys. It's perfectly watchable.
No idea what it is like for bandwidth, but it can't be that bad as it works okay streaming over 3G - and don't forget that if you have wifi access then the phone can use that just as easily as your laptop can.
