Easy isn't it?
Considering how much I'd built it up in my head it was really nothing. As soon as we were underway all my nerves went away and it felt like it was over in minutes.
Got 1 minor for a dodgy pull away on a particularly ugly junction which I'll never lay eyes on ever again. Hopefully today was my last ever visit to Rotherham with its undulating waves of wonky tarmac, jagged crevices and squadrons of blacked out Golf R's which travel everywhere at double the limit. The place is a nightmare.
I didn't tell a soul I'd started learning. No immediate plans to buy a bike. I just wanted to get the licence in the bag with no pressure. I'll eventually get some kind of lazy cruiser which I can strap a tent onto and take off into the sunset.
Mostly though... what a relief!
What's a mod 2?
^^ This
Vespas?
Bike test.
I've just passed my cpc module 2 which is truck related
I passed my cbt last month, on the way to this. I have a scooter on order, which I'm excited about, if it ever arrives!
#modlife...
Easy isn’t it?
Certainly was back in the day - ride carefully whilst the examiner can see you from the pavement, round the corner rag it to charge the battery, back round again and good as gold.
Well done on passing the much harder current test.
I thought it was a rebreather course...
Its the over 49kw test to get you onto big boys bikes.
👍I'm in Sheffield if you ever fancy a ride.

Good luck. I did my CBT in July in blazing sunshine and today was the first time that I've been freezing cold and we rode back from the test centre in torrential rain. Not great, I'll probably avoid it in future!

Thanks, the lessons were harder actually. The instructor was just very picky and didn't let anything slide and we'd usually ride 35-40 minutes at a time taking turns at the front. The test felt easy in comparison.
Obviously the biggest difference these days is the cost. I paid just over £800 for everything and luckily didn't have to retake any tests.
👍I’m in Sheffield if you ever fancy a ride.
Definitely, if you can wait until at least April 2022. I say I'm in no hurry to get a bike but I'll obviously be looking at them constantly.
Congrats! I passed my MOD2 almost a year ago and have had my bike since March this year.
I found the test fairly straight forward. I was more nervous of the MOD1.
Based in Manchester if anyone fancies a ride out. Dry road days only 😉
Was looking at it last night if only because it will cost as much as A1/A2 (unless I just do CBT and stay as a learner for eternity) and I've been toying with the idea of an electric scooter (SEAT Mo/Silence S01). Interesting to see the actual cost.
Congratulations

My latest toy
Congratulations, I passed mine last month too.
Currently on a Ktm Duke 390 when it isn’t too cold and wet.
Nice MT07, that’s what I was riding today just minus the neon wheels. Nice bike, I'd definitely consider one.

That's a good looking bike as well.
The problem will be choosing one! I like a bit of everything. I need to find somewhere with a relaxed attitude to test rides.
I passed almost a year ago today. Bought a bike in March (Tracer 700) and have been really enjoying it. Even commuted into Sheffield from the Peak in the dark and wet today. Sheffield bus lanes are very useful for speeding up a commute and free motorbike parking!
I plan to be a very fair weather rider! I might commute occasionally but it'll take me longer to get dressed up and get the bike out than it does to walk to work. It'll be nice for leaving work at 4:30 and taking the long way home on a sunny day though. I can probably be at Ladybower in 15 minutes from where I am.
I don't know what kind of bike I'll get. I really like classic style cruisers like the Triumph Street Twin and the Ducati Scrambler, but I really like the idea of a trail bike for exploring. The idea might be better than the reality though given how little access there is away from the tarmac.
I recently found out about the Trans Euro Trail and I'd like to visit some chunks of that.
Congrats. I was also surprised how easy Mod 2 was. Thinking logically it's no surprise. I have a car licence and can ride a bike. Just remembering to do the life savers, signals and lane controls.
I have a scrambler. I like it but I rarely use it as going distance on it is tiring and where i dont commute anymore I have no actual reason to ride. Wanting an adventure type tenere 700 or something for some trips and greenlaning.
i think doing my Mod1 & 2 were the highlight of my short lived motorcycle career. I did a 4 day intensive course with both parts on the final day. Was a fun few days as i did it with my buddy and we had an instructor between us.
I only rode bikes for just over two years until i decided i would either end up losing my licence for a long time or end up... worse. But thats just me, my mate who passed at the same time still loves riding his bike.
As and when you get to the point of buying a bike, enjoy all the test rides! so many different flavours and sizes to enjoy! 😀
Bought a bike in March (Tracer 700)
How do you find the Tracer? I have a Triumph Bonneville, which is a nice relaxed ride, but I commute all year round, 20 miles each way, and I keep thinking something with a bit of weather protection (and ABS) would be more suitable. Keep looking at the Tracer 7, CB500X and V-Strom 650.
Currently on a Ktm Duke 390 when it isn’t too cold and wet.
Absolute quality bike. Had one for about 18 months when I was commuting to college ~35 miles each way. Perfect blend of style, riding position, handling, power and economy for UK roads. Trellis frame isn't ideal for keeping clean during the winter months though.
The Tracer is my first big bike, in fact only bike so don't have a lot of experience, but it's been great. I have done a four day tour around Wales on it, evening back roads in the summer and commuting to work in the dark and wet and it has coped with it all perfectly.
I plan to get something bigger and more advanced (tiger 900, maybe the new Transalp if it looks good etc) next year, but that is mainly because I can rather than any problems with the Tracer.

I was exactly the same, well apart from I only rode for about a year, and my life changed. Really it came down to the fact I only had time/money for one hobby and MTBing won out for me.
I really enjoyed the course though, so no regrets, made me a better driver.
Remember when I said I was in no rush to buy a bike? My ebay watch list is now full of KTM Duke 390's. All 1 or 2 years old for just under 4 grand. I can't think of a better bike to get started on for that kind of money.

I could swap it for something bigger and sexier in a year or so, or at that price, run it along side an old DRZ or similar to get my dirty adventure riding started.
Congratulations, an excellent achievement and choice!
I had a really good ride on mine this morning coming back from the gym after a rubbish weights session. However, was nice to be riding in the daylight again and was able to push it a little harder and get more fun. Definitely cheered me up!
You may wish to consider the Royal Enfield Himalyan. Get great reviews for an all-rounder that can do well off-road too.
I was very tempted to get one, but bought this instead as I am a massive tosser poser:

Nice bike, and obviously Mustang as well!
I actually live just around the corner from a Royal Enfield dealer and they've got absolutely everything in. They really look the part but I was under the impression they were a bit cheap and naff. The reviews look quite good though. I might pop in for a closer look.
I like the Interceptor, they've definitely got one of these in the window...

I had a 390 from new... it was cracking fun. Only thing is that overtakes need a little thinking/planning as it goes well, but doesn't grunt like a bigger bike.
The RE is WAY better than you'd think you know, a few mates have owned one and loved them.
Here's one of them at Cadwell on his RE.
Right, I'm sitting at work with nothing to do, and walking distance from my desk is a brand new 2021 KTM Duke 390. £5100 interest free. It's not what I was planning to do but I keep thinking that it's the same price as crappy, middle of the range e-bike, so why not?
It's a grey one like this...

I'll check out the RE's on Saturday morning but they're a fair chunk more expensive. I really didn't want to spend much more than 5k for a first bike.
Time to get some insurance quotes, which I'm sure will bring me back down to Earth!
Sadly, not my Mustang. I have a C4 Picasso lol
£4k new:

I passed my test back in 1983, it was easy then, the examiner was on foot.
I've just started restoring the first bike I bought, a Bultaco 250. Paid £400 in 1981 for it.
I am off to Almeria to ride this on track for 5 days tomorrow.
Grr I can never get image links to work from google photos on here 🙁

Swoon, that is one cool machine. Don't forget you'll need an alpine shepherd's outfit to wear while your riding it!
Last rode my mates bultaco in about 91 I think, happy days
Congrats! I passed mine in the spring and bought an absolute beater for my first bike.

I do like the KTMs and the Enfields, I really like the Himalayan especially for the price but I’m worried it’ll feel slow after the ER6, not that I like to ride fast, but I’ve loved not having to wring its neck all the time like I did with my scooter.
Definitely check out insurance before you get your heart set on anything, even with 2 years ncd the difference between a small engined cheap new bike and an older big bike was surprising. I could have insured a 2013 CBF1000 for less that a 390 Duke.
Royal Enfield really need to do a slightly larger engined Himalyan. The slight lack of power is what's putting me off. 50hp would be just dandy
The other good thing about my Bultaco is its road tax price = Zero !
Plus it wont need an MOT 🙂
Being a 1967 model, its almost as old as me.
Congrats on passing your test
so why not?
Personally I wouldnt bother with anything less than 600cc
Anything smaller may be easier to learn on, but after 6 months you'll be wanting the extra power and 600cc is enough without being crazy.
I'd also not buy new as theres a reasonable chance that you'll drop it in your first year of riding. If you scuff something older, it just adds to the patina...
I'd recommend what I did, and get something like a Yamaha Fazer 600 (or the newer Tracer)
You'll get a good one for £3k, and that will give you plenty of change for insurance and heated gloves (highly recommended for winter).
Its beginner friendly and enough room for you to grow into. 6 years on it hasnt missed a beat commuting 4 days a week all year around, and is still fun to ride.
Well done Sharky
I did my CBT and theory in the last month or two and going to progress to the Mods in the new year. Just trying to convince myself I'm not making a mistake and the wife keeps making me watch Ambulance programs.

I just read that they are R&Ding a 650 version of the Himalayan for possible first release next year (or the year after) - It's likely to use the same engine as the Interceptor. Might be worth waiting on that

Kinda agree, depends on what you actually want out of a bike. The Duke 390 I had was utterly brilliant but eventually I craved that little bit of extra oomph. I ended up with a 990 Supermoto, it's about as close to the 390 as I could have hoped in terms of handling, body position, general feel, but has oh so much more grunt.

This is what I'm trying to get into the head of my bro-in-law: buy a cheapo late-90s YZF/CBR/ZXR/GSXR for your trackdays in case the unthinkable happens. Instead he takes his brand new Speed Triple RS...
Obviously it's your money to spend how you want @sharkattack but for a first bike after passing your test I'd recommend 2nd hand as well.
Had a Mark 1 Duke 390 when I picked bikes up again a few years ago, great on B-road twisties with lots of changes of direction. Not brilliant in traffic as throttle was a bit snatchy at low revs - later ones are supposed to be better.
On faster roads you might want more power though.
Oh and cleaning orange frames and wheels gets boring real quick
Maybe have a look at a 2014/15 bike though - plenty around for £2.5k and differences are mainly cosmetic, could always trade up to a newer one if you love it or chop it in for something bigger without a load of depreciation on the new one.
Maybe look at a used Street Triple around £5k if that's your budget, they are supposed to be superb
