Add the fees, delivery and unknowns and they are not such a bargain.

I've bought a few cars from copart, sometimes you win, but mostly you break even once you've fixed everything

The best cars to win on are £15k+ outside the pocket money bidders reach.

That would make sense.  Did you do the work yourself or pay?

Molgrips goes salvage rebuilds UK. I'd watch that.

You know on Autotrader you can set it to "Only Show Cat S/C/D/N".

Some good bangers on there.

This is interesting: https://www.copart.co.uk/lot/56924343/clean-title-2021-hyundai-ioniq-5-pr-sandtoft

If it weren't so far away I might be interested.  It doesn't look bad, but it says it's a non-runner.  Which suggests something has happened with the drivetrain electrics or possibly battery damage.  There are quite a few low or really low mileage EVs on there, I wonder if insurance companies are just not touching them.

Y'know... that's not a bad idea.  You've heard of competence porn, how about incompetence porn?

I've a neighbour who had a year old, 8k mile Ford Mustang thing electric car written off. It looked like a really minor doors bump, but apparently there was a question of battery damage so they binned it.

I'm not gonna buy it, even I'm not daft enough to jump on the first one I see 🙂 Well, not unless it goes for a couple of grand.  But I'd really need to have a very good look at it first and that's the issue.

That's what I am thinking is the issue. But, if that's insurance companies' attitudes, perhaps they won't insure an EV at all after a DIY repair.

Those cars do V2G, I think - it might be worth it just to buy and leave parked up connected to your house.  Cheaper than a house battery!

Seen lots of EVs go through copart, many run and drive. They do try hard to get things running, that way they make more money.

Nobody bids on copart until the last 30secs.

So the prices you see are nowhere near where they end up.

Sellers usually have a reserve and try to bid you up if you win.

Best thing to do is watch a few go through and see the prices they go for.

No point in going looking at them, if you want to win one worthwhile you will need to bid on hundreds, you can't view hundreds.

Yeah I've watched a few.  My hope is that people are too shit-scared of EVs to have a go.  That I5 says it's not got structural damage which, if true, would rule out battery damage.  Let's see what it goes for.

80% of my problems working on cars are having to crawl under it on the drive and worrying it's going to fall on me. If I had an actual project, I'd come up with something more substantial.

If you are a workplace doing EVs then yes you need a load more training and procedures so that will put off some, but it's mostly one man bands or hobbyists who buy salvage.

I bid an a few Nissan leaf a while back but failed to win one at a price that made sense.

There will be a kill link that emergency services (or recovery driver) can pull out to isolate hv, this may be pulled and missing

These things also often have a pyro fuse that blows to isolate the HV side usually when an airbag goes

So it could be as simple as that....or...

Yeah I replaced cells on my Prius. I bought the special high voltage insulating gloves, but not rubber covered spanners.  TBH I don't think that particular car has actual battery damage, it looks like it could be HV gubbins up front, maybe damaged cable blowing a fuse.  Then again, you wouldn't put HV cables in an exposed position that could be damaged by that small of an impact.

Take a look at synetiq too, lower fees, fewer cars but also fewer frenzied bidder's.

Also bear in mind copart load cars and move them around with big forklifts, there is ALWAYS undercarriage damage from the forks, usually undertrays and exhausts

On an EV the battery is usually in the middle underneath

Most co part auctions I have followed have not ended up that cheap when you take into account fees.

80% of my problems working on cars are having to crawl under it on the drive and worrying it’s going to fall on me. If I had an actual project, I’d come up with something more substantial.

What problems are you having? What are you currently using? (trolley jack, axle stands etc)

I made these ramps out of cheap timber. You drive until your wheels hit the stop. You have quite a lot of height to work under at one end that way. If you want the whole car up then you jack up the other end of the ramp and chuck a couple of breeze blocks under it giving you space to work.

The drive isn't flat. I use axle stands usually.

I m following a car auction online, 4 days to run, I can't see why anyone would bid now.  Deadline minus 1 min for me if I go for it.

My first thought on starting reading this thread was that it was on Copart. I used to work next to their site in Westbury. I often used to wonder who on earth would buy and almost completely burned-out shell, and they had a few of those.

@wca - with the added bonus that if it falls on you, you are already on the stretcher!

For the V5, if you've got a Cat B car that can't be put back on the road, but can be broken for spares, then you take the V5 and Vin plate off your burnt out shell, and stick them in the Cat B.

Obviously that's illegal, so the paperwork just says you did the opposite (stuck the engine from the B into the burnt out one).

It's why it's advisable to trawl the net for photos of the written off car to try and find pics of it pre-restoration (and tipple check the VIN numbers)

I've seen the way they treat the cars down at their depot in Avonmouth. Absolutely no way I'd even contemplate buying anything from them unless I only wanted the drivetrain or interior.
