Your Mrs Chinchilla if you play your cards right 😉
we just had some logs delivered by friends. Completely narked as they've spent the day replacing / fixing fences ruined last night by poachers after deer. They go after on the local herds - aside from the legality / safety aspects they kill indiscriminately and also deny a wage to those paid to cull legally and selectively.
Last time the residents of one of the old folks homes sat and watched whilst they pulled up in the morning with a transit, loaded it with 8 carcasses as well as two drugged white hinds they'd tranquilized for resale. The Police reckoned they'd be headed for one of the large estates locally...

Please take this comment constructively, as theres few people more opposed to deer poachers than I am - but if thats true, then I'm gobsmacked! Tranquilliser darts, either gas or blowpipe, are section five firearms and almost impossible to get hold of, there are a handful of people in the country with access to the equipment, and they'd also need the controlled drugs to do it with - if its true then the Police need to pull their fingers out and start kicking in doors, as its far, far beyond a bit of poaching. 😯
if theres any more info, then please, please let me know and I'll pass it round some of the stalking fraternity to keep their eyes and ears out!
my venison was legal i can assure you
Zulu eleven, do you really believe that? When you can easily get hold of hand guns then surely there must be some rogue ****ers out there peddling tranq darts??
Wrightyson - do you think that if we were talking about people going around the countryside at night with illegal handguns the police would let the issue lie, or be all over it like a rash with firearms teams and helicopters?
Sorry Zulu you've lost me there! Are you saying that there aren't lots of hand guns or are lots of hand guns? Surely it's easy to rig up some kind of tranq firing weapon? Must be a fair few vets who have access to that equipment?
I'm not saying it couldn't happen, illegal firearms are out there, but a tranq weapon is very rare, and unlike pistols or shotguns there must be very, very few in illegal circulation (unlike pistols they're banned/very heavily regulated in pretty much every country going) - I'm saying that if it did, then theres something a lot more important than a case of poaching going on, and I would have expected the police would be dealing with this somewhat more seriously than a van full of deer carcasses.
Right with you now Zulu, but still slightly disagree, these drugs such as lidocaine and even diazepam are widely available and are used as animal sedatives ,that coupled with the way these people can adapt a replica fire arm to fire for real then then adaptation to tranq shooters can't be that hard?
Autumn = Game On.
Smoked pheasant breasts and venison steaks here tonight.
Last weekend had partridge.
Bloody love game. So tasty and not at all expensive.
We buy from a licensed game dealer so all is well. Wonder why more people don't do game.
Thing is poachers dont just poach these days, few deer here and there may be a spot of plant, some drugs and good old fashioned theft. You dont have to live in the countryside to be part of the diversifing rural economy. Not the sort of people you'd want to meet on a night ride.
Deer though - look good enough to eat and they are.

You sound as surprised as I was but it's apparently so - there were deer carcasses just tossed in the back whereas the white hinds were carted carefully in tarpaulin slings - no idea what the police are / have been doing about it.
The area suffers a fair bit with 'rural' crime - heating oil tanks emptied, agricultural plant goes missing etc. They've even started drilling and syphoning (sp?) car fuel tanks parked in the (isolated) train station carpark (happened to me). No idea if it's one and the same lot of people responsible though they'd have to have a reasonable amount of local knowledge - there are a number of herds scattered around the village and surrounding countryside (including some that have breed with reindeer released when their owner / farmer went bust). You couldn't just rock up and expect to find them, especially those with the white hinds...
The friend is ex-army, champion marksman etc but he's wise enough not to be going out in the evening when they're on the farm. Just has to waste his weekends repairing fences and tidying up after them.
Wonder why more people don't do game.
because people want intensively farmed chicken pumped full of water and presented in neatly cut up bits wrapped in plastic

True. Sadly the best local butcher who specialized in game has shut up his shop as he makes more money as a middle-man selling to supermarkets and restaurants than he did with his retail. I think people were put off by the hanging birds, rabbits etc.
