...I'm 50. Is this really sad?

I used to skate a bit in the early 90s and had a cheap nasty longboard when I lived in Oz to get around but I was much younger then and not a middle aged pillar of the community with teenage children and a cat..

Was kind of thinking of using it as a fitness tool and rather liked the idea of gently swishing down local lanes whilst doing a bit of dancing (clearly where nobody can see me)

Will it end up in the same draw as the gopro?

55.
I'm a month into it, it's great.
You'll be needing a proper skateboard next to learn tricks, trust me.

Buy a helmet, I still have balance issues from hitting tarmac really hard 20yrs ago.

Backside powerslide/speed scrub> stall > out cold for ten minutes.

so I’m told...

What's really sad is you haven't told us what it is.

I would say firstly you have one life, live it to the max.

Secondly and more importantly, of the many joys of having children, embarrassing them at every opportunity is the greatest of them all 😀.

It's a Loaded Dervish Sama with Orangatang In Heat wheels.

This is the type of helmet I was thinking of..

Shops should be opening on Monday, I’m thinking it might be worth popping down to Bath.
There’s an outside chance that, should the skate shop happen to be open, a longboard just might accidentally turn up in the boot of my car...

You will find that ladies love it. Ladies approximately 20 or more years older than us, but ladies all the same...

Normal type boards for me, one set up for (failing to do) tricks, the other for cruising. But really, any plank with wheels is mint fun.

Also have a BMX which is great fun too. Planning an early morning park tour on Sunday.

I'm 41, and use my longboard for local errands as often as possible. Neighbors are now accustomed to me skating past on the way to the corner shop or (back in normal life) to pick up the kids from cubs/beavers/school.

I keep meaning to learn to slide it, as I've had the board for 20 years on and off I really should have done so by now!

I did not ride mine for a while. Felt old etc. Now the kids insist I ride when they skate. Been out a lot in lock down and it’s all come back. Just like riding a bike! All the grannies smile.
And strangely it’s done my creaky knees the world of good.
I have an old Lush samba. It’s going out this weekend when rain eases off.
No it’s not sad.
You don’t stop skating because you get old, you get old because you stopped skating 🙃

Got my first skateboard, a longboats, for my 30th birthday. I'm now 44. Drag it out regularly to cruise and carve down the track at the back of my house. Kids showing an interest as well.

You don’t stop skating because you get old, you get old because you stopped skating

True. About so many things.

I bought a surf skate a few weeks ago, a nice blend if longboard and shortboard, with some extra pumpability. Been playing around in my local skatepark (never skated park before), having loads of fun

55 years old. I never really stopped skating - though I long ago stopped being 'rad' - apart from the decade when I lived on a beach in Thailand, I didn't cycle much then either.

Why would it be 'sad'? Anything that keeps you moving is great. I saw someone on an electric longboard a few days ago, and I quite fancy getting one of those. I reckon I could just about get to work on it.

I bought a longboard off SportPursuit. Great fun even though I never really skated as a child. Upgraded to a Wowgo electric one. Does something like 28mph and is scarily fast but brilliant fun. Helmet most definitely needed!

Buy one they are great

This makes me feel better about wanting a bmx in my late thirties…

Still trying to stop the urge to buy a bargain BMX race bike at aged 52 (last had one at 40). I like race bikes as they are nice to just ride around and mess around on as I am not going to learning tail whips and no handers...

Not a longboard but I steal my daughters smoothstar whenever I get chance, really good fun in old style bowls. Anyone got into pump tracks on a skateboard? Great leg workout and good laugh as well.

Well my oldest daughter said   "well you already mess around in the mud with a bike, surf really badly and quit your proper job to sell kayaks so don't kid yourself that you are in any way grown up..."

and my younger daughter said "shotgun first go"

Not sad at all, get out and ride that sucker!
Be realistic tho, falling off will hurt more than it did 30yrs ago.
Nowt better than seeing an (slightly) older guy out having fun.
I rode past a group of teenagers (I’d guess 13-15 max) on my surly KM a while ago, and one of the girls said ‘ooh, look at the colour of that bike’ just loud enough for me to hear, I enjoyed it.
I’m 51.
So get out on your board and enjoy it, don’t worry about what others think, but rest assured there will be people who see you on it and wish it was them.

My son wanted one a while ago so I picked up two shortboards from the local sports shop (Tony Hawk signature series so I don't know if they are 'proper' skateboards or 'toy' skateboards).

I quickly changed the wheels for 60mm 78a cruiser wheels since my daughter refused to come out with me because the 54mm 99a wheels made too much noise.

Then I was in another sport shop and I noticed a Z-flex roundtail longboard with 40% off so I thought why not.

For me the big break through was getting to the stage where I could push and comfortably roll while standing on one leg. Before that it was two hesitant shoves before throwing my foot back onto the board. Now I feel like I can actually go to the shops on it without completely embarrassing myself.

My son seems to have lost interest though.

Went into Bath today, needed some new underwear from M&S, had a look in HMV, bought some CD’s, and went along to Route One, thought I’d get myself a new hoodie for cooler times.
While I was in there I had a look at what longboards they had in...

Boooooom!

Thanks, that’s the sound I’ll be making every time I fall off it!
Couldn’t resist, it was £99.95, and I got 10% off as well! 8-ply maple deck, 70mm wheels, 80 durometer, so nice and cushy for cruising.
It’s a Mindless Sanke III

I'll watch out for you doing this down Lansdown then... eek!

Always thought one would be fun to cruise around Vicky Park on...

We have one of the motorised variety. It’s already seen me off in the kitchen. Ridiculously fast for the uninitiated/brave. Rather good fun. Needs a decent smooth surface plus protection.

Plus plenty of the shorter ones. I wasn’t any good the first time around, I’m averse to self-damage at 52. My Eldest son (22) looks blankly when I mention the hallowed words “gull wing” and “kryptonics”. I have clearly failed as a parent.

Bwaahahahahahahaha. Nope. A pootle around Vicky Park, maybe. I’ve got to practice standing on the damn thing and staying upright first!
Just watched that video again, that’s truly terrifying! A very high sphincter-factor, that.

My only words of caution are to take care of your achilles tendons; don't be like me and end up hobbling about for 4 weeks and having to explain to people that it's a skateboard injury...
Do some gentle stretches and don't be pushing off too hard. If you are brand new, take the time to learn how to ride switch too; might as well while you're doing it!

Ooh, and tighten up your trucks to start with to avoid that wobble.

Big blue Kryps and Powell-Peralta Bones for me, still got the Kryps on my old board upstairs, and my brother has my Bones on his old board somewhere. Must try to get them back sometime; they’d look good on my longboard.
I’ve got the appropriate teeshirt and two more on their way...
