I was given a vintage bottle of port

porto Hutchison colheita 1977

im not much of a drinker and have never tried port.

is it worth selling and if so where can you sell alcohol?

Simply Google it. There are various places where you will see what your bottle is selling for, and the sites will tell you how to go about it.

You'll pay about £120 for that at a merchant, or probably get half that at auction.

If you feel that is worth doing crack on, but before you do, get a more reasonably priced port (something like a Late Bottled Vintage) and try it with a good cheese board. You may well learn to love it, and then you can save the vintage one for a special occasion.

Port is a drink you can savour. Ie perfect for a "not much of a drinker".

I second the above. Try a nice port, favourably whilst sharing a nice cheese and charcuterie board.

Then tan the bottle.

If you want to try before you buy the Maynard’s 10 year Tawny in Aldi is cheap and very drinkable. Tawny is also much closer to Colheita than a Vintage or Ruby Port

1977 was declared an excellent vintage so you are in luck. So am I, my Godfather bought be a case of port when I was born that year.

If you do drink it you'll need to decant it as it will have thrown a decent amount of sediment. Also how good it will be will be very much affected by how it has been stored (as will value).

One of life's pleasures is a little splosh of port, a couple of cheeses, some chacuterie and a sharp knife. Maybe a sliced cornichon.

Get a reasonably priced bottle to try, and take it from there. But definitely try it with the above

One of life's other pleasures is a dose of port poured into a serving of Blue WKD - especially if you like your Vimto.

i am a caveman........ i drink my port in a long glass topped up with lemonade or tonic.

As Lunge said, Tawny is closer to Colheita than LBV.
LBV is sweeter and fruitier than Tawny.
Buyers would want pictures of the top, all the bottles of Fonseca 1985 I have bought recently have had the foil and cap replaced (not the cork).
The cork, even if the bottle has been kept on it’s side it may disintegrate when opening.
A ‘Butlers Friend’ or helix corkscrew will help, but the bottom of the cork may have to be pushed in to the bottle to get the Port out, so a filter/tea strainer may be required.
Port is about 20 percent ABV, Do not ‘spank’ or ‘tan’ it, you will get the mother of all hangovers.
Being a weirdo, I like Tawny port chilled.
