Radio 6 is Radio 2 for the somewhat up themselves.

If thats how you choose to refer to my innate cultural superiority, then thats your call

Philistine! 😉

When they splash a load of money on Camden, or Glasto etc. they get their moneys worth by repeating it endlessly for months

Agree with a lot above. R6 is my station of choice but it can get repetitive, (the playlist is available online to look at). Some of the "DJs" need putting out to pasture - Hobbs, Lamacq etc.

I don't mind older DJs - even if they are the same people that were on R1 in my yoof. But the fact Lamacq and his overly cheery radio persona/beds/jingles/features come on just when I'm getting tired and grumpy at the end of the day does my head in.

edit - as I listen online at work, I'm just going to avoid listening live I think. Apart from repetitive news bulletins it's not a big deal.

There is a lot of truth in this, but I can acknowledge it because I am knowingly up myself

How do you think I feel? I'm too knowingly up myself for Radio 6, never mind the straightforward and let's face it more professionally delivered pleasures of Radio 2.

You could just follow the 6 Music Bot on twitter, then you could moan about what they play without even listening to it?

Looks like you missed Kate, played her 44 minutes ago, duh!

Radio 2 is for people who were into top 40 pop music 30 years ago and then nothing new ever since. Now it's comforting to have it repeated back to them by softly spoken geriatrics so they can reminisce about school discos and family holidays to Blackpool.

I only rently got into 6 Music but Unholy Elixir is the one track that consistently leads me to retune. Hoping it will dropp off the playlist soon.

If anyone can listen to Mary Anne Hobgoblin (Mark and Lard reference) for more than a few minutes, they are probably not the sort of person I'd gel with

I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t find MAH incredibly annoying. Not sure how she ended up where she is.

Not sure how she ended up where she is.

Because she perfectly regurgitates the 6music narrative about every tiny aspect of music being a journey, telling a story, impacting someone's life, taking you to a magical place etc. All the while believing her own words, which are softly spoken like a welcoming safe place

Yeah, yeah I get it to a degree, but sometimes music can just be nice to listen to, without all the bullshit

Nicely said!
So then 6Music must be for people who were into indie music 20+ years ago and prefer hearing their old faves repeated back to them by ex Radio1 DJs. They don't mind hearing new stuff as long as it's not too different to the old stuff.
(Hence the Marmite nature of things like Kate T.)
(Not that I'm criticising, of course. Each to their own and all that 🙂 )

Radio 6 does tend to play some edgy nonsense a times but as others have said music is subjective. At least they are only three minutes or so long.. i can switch off my brain for that length of time and just not listen to hard. Mary anne hobbs on the other hand...

I've never heard of Kate Tempest before this thread.

Turns out she's a bucket load better than most. Well done to her.

cheers

This perfectly describes Steve Lamaqcq. He has a thing for obscure indie stuff that peaked on the middle pages of the NME in 1988.

I love 6, because it's the best option, but there's loads I'd change. I'd be scouring the nation for new DJ's and ditching the repetitive, daytime playlist for a start. Even when you like something on Monday they make you sick of it by Friday.

In a nutshell, 6 is the only station with the element of surprise. They do play stuff that no other station would dream of and regularly play tunes that have probably never been played on the radio anywhere. I'll sit through the sub-optimal bits to wait for the nuggets.

One person’s ‘heart-rending’ poetry is another's ‘edgy’ nonsense.

That said, I’d much prefer to listen to Kate Tempest at a gig than read about her in the Spectator or The Guardian, or the NME...etc

There’s not much to say other than:

‘Now, here’s why you’re wrong about that song that made you cry/snort with derision/delete as applicable’

I have wondered for a long time what dirt Lamacq has on the 6Music execs. There's no way on god's green earth he's survived this long through talent.

Weirdly I can kind of cope with Steve Lurpak, don't find him too offensive at all, although he is a sucker for any band that plays guitars and shouts a lot. But we've already discussed that...

How odd - a thread on Katie Tempest following fast on the heels of a thread on Billy Eilish. Am I missing all the threads talking about people disliking young male artists?

Idles and Sleaford Mods all seem to be men, and there are enough people disliking them on here. And last I checked, Steve Lamacq was a man, but you may have more up to date information there

Sorry, I must not have been clear enough in the first place -

Am I missing all the threads talking about people disliking young male artists?

It's an observation - I make no judgement by it, just saying what I'm seeing. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Wow, just wow.

Wow away. Anything useful to add?

Just for parity, Stormzy is a bit of a nobber

Awesome. See any new threads on young male artists yet?

I know! Can you imagine? Anyone who disagrees with you is clearly a dull snowflake - who needs that burden?

Another thread I missed. I wish people would start linking instead of just talking about them.

In my head, I'd say no - I made the observation that people have made threads critical of two young female artists, and I haven't seen corresponding threads relating to young male artists. If I'm a troll as a result of making that observation, then yep - that's me.

Have we got any threads on gender-neutral artists we do/don't like?

I've recently started to self-identify as a non-gender-specific border collie, but so far it hasn't effected my taste in music

No, that's Radio X.

FWIW, I'm really enjoying listening to Kate Tempest.

The first time I heard Firestorm on the radio, I thought "what's this rubbish, it's not music, I don't want to listen to poetry".
The second time, I thought "this is ok actually there's some nice wordplay"
The third time, I thought "I've never met this girl in the song but I think I love her too"

So pondo, just so I understand here. People disliking male musical artists don't count.... unless the thread title says something about men? And that means... something?

From a more empirical point of view of course, one would have to find an artist producing the same sound as Kate Tempest with the same audience and exposure for the STW crowd, and then see how many mentions are made of each. Otherwise it's just the equivalent of "have you ever noticed how people only live on a *blue* planet, hmmmm? HMMMM? Prejudice much?"

Just so you understand, I made an observation - I thought it might be interesting, I thought it might tell us something about ourselves, I thought we could all explore it together, but don't worry, I shan't be making THAT mistake again!

You made an observation, sure, but with a fairly obvious accusation attached to it.

Given that, you’ve not really got any grounds for getting your petticoats all rustled when people reply to said accusation

Problem was you typed that observation and posted it, without really giving it much thought. It means nothing that there are only posts about women artists being disliked. I suspect the posters of those threads do actually like some female artists. Hard to know really as they only post the negative, without giving any alternative recommendation, which would be a better thing to do in my view. Like, I can’t stand that Kate Tempest, why don’t 6Music play some Catnapp instead? for example.

I didn't write it with accusation in mind - I mean, I'm as guilty as anyone, I'm here reading the threads and mulling it over, if I definitively thought it all indicated we're a bunch of misogynist poopheads, I wouldn't be afraid to say it. But if it seems the response to my post is to attack, then I retract it without prejudice, and apologies if it made you feel bad about yourself.

eh, it's all good. And I guess it's something worth asking yourself, to check like.

Now that's out the way: Pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs - I *REALLY* can't stand them. Kate Tempest makes me wonder "huh, wish there was more of a tune to this"; Pigsx7 make me turn the radio off every single time I hear it.
