Don't need posh just something smart & good value for the renty house, so who's good? B&Q, Victoria Plumb, Plumb Centre etc? Anyone have any experience?
(in Durham if it makes any difference)

This firm are local to us and seemed cheap when we looked. They might do a bit more discount if you ask.

Just had our bathroom done..

Priced up what we needed on Victoria Plumb and it certainly is cheaper. Then spoke to a mate in the trade who said don't bother (a fair proportion of his trade comes from replacing VP stuff that has proved to be 'complete rubbish' quote/unquote).

We got our stuff from Claygate and the furniture from Bauhaus with 30% off RRP by buying local (not from my mate as he lives to far from me to make it practical to deliver)

eBay for taps, waste units etc, you'll save £100s.
eg. Saved £400 buying a complete shower from eBay compared to B&Q (B&Q sale prices too).
Last week bought a basin waste unit (swivel plug thing), B&Q: £24.99, eBay: £8.95
And don't listen to the "lower quality" folk - choose a reputable seller with good feedback and you'll find quality stuff at decent prices.

Using B&Q as a benchmark for comparing prices is frankly not to smart. However, as I said to a customer who wasted 4 hours of my time browsing catalogs and after buying his suite elsewhere, had the audacity to ask me if he'd got a good deal. "Do you think you got a good deal?"

We recently used Better Bathrooms (on line retailer of bathrooms) but with a showroom and warehouse a few miles from coolhandluke towers.

they were Ok, delivered on time, smashed some times and changed them.

not bad quality to be fair.

Pop into Plumb Centre in Pity Me and ask for Matt and I'll see what I can do. Have a decent idea of what style of stuff you want first as it'll make things easier. I'm not in on friday. Email in profile if you need it.

Wickes stuff seems ok but for the love of all things holy don't use their fitters!

££££ 3 months , 3 seperate leaks , 2 lots of destroyed kitchen ceiling, 2 retiled floors and we now just about have something that resembles a (poorly fitted) bathroom :-/

So you're in the trade (and obviously would be against eBay).
Who would you suggest a retail customer compare prices to, that would be smart? I'll happily use them.

ERGONOMIC DESIGNS. Used them once and about to do it again, much more interesting stuff than the standard but well priced and a good online showroom plus a real showroom.

Ergonomic Designs shower unit identical (except smaller) to the one I bought on eBay... but £200 more expensive.
Carry on being "smart" folks, it's your money.

Out of all the online stores I preferred the BigBathroomShop.co.uk. Everything they sell is branded, prices are good and most things are in stock.
The prices on things like taps are a fraction of the price of any DIY stores, that's even with me having trade accounts at the ones local to me.

Did ours recently - had a few months to gather the bits needed which helps. Took advantage of various offers (like Bathstore selling Kaldewei steel baths in a 20% off weekend thing) and a couple of eBay bargains, then had a known good fitter come down and do the actual work (linky). Best purchase (if a loo can be classed as such), RAK 600 toilet...about half the price of the equiv in B&Q, really good quality.

Yep good observation DezB. I found a cheap(er) Grohe shower elsewhere and E-D price matched it so I at least was very happy with them.

DezB There are many independent plumbers merchants that supply to trade and to regular Joes. It's a bit annoying to some plumbers that there are ones out there who will sell supplies to you for the same price they will sell to us (plumbers)
Personally, I don't mind if a customer wants to do the leg work themselves.
So, although I wouldn't recommend one in particular, I would certainly advise price comparing and haggling.
Also, go for known brands such as Bristan, Grohe, Armitage Shanks etc etc. These products carry worthwhile warranties. There's an awful lot of tat being sold out of places like B&Q. In fact some shower manufacturers (for example) make a range of products specifically for large outlets like the afore mentioned and they are of extremely poor quality.
