Until today. I’ve always quite liked the cover, but the original is even better.

What ya got?
You might be surprised then that not only did Joe Cocker cover A Little Help From My Friends, he's died again.
Roger Moore has also died again recently.
Probably get burned at the stake for this but I didn't realise FGTH's Born to Run was a cover when I was a lad.
And to be fair I think its possibly better than the original...
Haven't Bananarama just reformed?
I quite liked them....and Boney M.
And to be fair I think its possibly better than the original…
I've wondered about this a bit, and my theory is that's fairly common. The version you hear first is the one you grow to like, so anything afterwards seems a bit off.
For me: the Zutons' Valerie is better than Amy Winehouse/ Mark Ronson's version. And (more contentiously), the Futureheads' version of Hounds of Love is better than Kate Bush - but only cause it's the one I heard first

Funnily enough, considering fb-atb’s cheeky post 😉 I think Joe Cocker’s version of A Little Help... is the only cover I prefer to the original. Although I do equally like Hendrix version of All along the watchtower.
Haven’t Bananarama just reformed?
Keren can cover my Venus any time 😂
What happened to your holistic paramour?

Best version is Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
Jonny Cash’s Hurt is a cover.

Prrrrretty sure I updated that thread!
Prrrrretty sure I updated that thread!
Sorry. Must have missed that. I'll assume it didn't end well. Say no more!
Hurt (NiN, Cash, Leona Lewis). The latter was surprising when I heard it, but only in the "who came up with that concept?" way. Cash's version was good, but I dont think he really added anything to it? I'm not sure what I expected different but it wasn't different enough to justify itself. Hence I suppose why so many people assume it's the original.
Kinks - Days - Original
Kirstie McColl - Days - Best
Elvis Costello - Days - Dreary
Jonny Cash’s Hurt is a cover.
And nowhere near as good as the original. Probably supports @nicko74's theory.
Madonna’s American Pie is a cover!!

Cover by Santana:
Original by Fleetwood Mac:
I agree with Vader!
& their version of “do you you know the way to San Jose” was rather ace.
And when I was 14 I didn’t know that was a cover either.
Both bloody awful, but, until fairly recently, I didn’t know this ... etc
(truth be told, i didn’t really care either 😊 )
Born to built to grind - the only version needed:
When young I didn't realise Tainted Love was a cover.
Renegade of Funk - I think the RATM cover is much better than the original, Maggie's Farm too.
Tainted love, difficult to top the original. Although somewhere I have a female cover, possibly acoustic, that is utterly beautiful. Can't remember the artist, damn!
This - though the original was released after the cover.
Not sure which I prefer.
Edit : Damn how do I embed videos?
Edit : Actually, listening to both again, Roy Orbison's voice is the winner.
Jonny Cash’s Hurt is a cover.
And nowhere near as good as the original
Same goes for his Mercy Seat cover IMO
(isn't Respect a "not Aretha Franklin" song ?)
Cash’s version of Hurt is miles better than the NiN original! I’ve just listened to both; there’s no comparison
Hush by Kula Shaker is a cover! Totally surprised when i heard the original
And of course the absolutestest muther****ah best ever non cover version
Cash’s version of Hurt is miles better than the NiN original!
Agreed. And I'm a big NiN fan.
Cash’s version of Hurt is miles better than the NiN original!
Trent rates it:
Trent Reznor remembers the first time he saw the video for Johnny Cash's cover of his 1994 song "Hurt." "Tears started welling up," he said. "I realized it wasn't really my song anymore. It just gave me goose bumps up and down my spine. It's an unbelievably powerful piece of work. After he passed away I remember feeling saddened, but being honored to have framed the end of his life in something that is very tasteful."

Jonny Cash’s Hurt is a cover.
....and a great cover made even better by an award winning video
recent nasty experience Fri morning classic Rock station requests only:
Caller "I can't hurry love by the Supremes"
Presenter "not got that" (never play earlier than eighties) "here's the Dixie Chicks..."
Presenter "think I prefer the Phil Collins original.."
bangs head repeatedly
wanders off to see if the Motown story is on youtube
from this to this...
I’m a big NiN fan

Walk this way - Aerosmith/Beatles.
Same goes for his Mercy Seat cover IMO
not the ultra vivid scene song then
Architects cover of Blood bank by Bon Iver is probably better than the original, but both are great.

Who knew Subterranean Homesick Blues was a cover 🙂

For the record, I prefer Nilsson’s version of Without You, and both versions of Naive Melody equally.
Walk on By
Oi Count Zero that isn’t the original. It is a great version though with some nods to previous performances. Love the Heads.

Criminal that this comment was overlooked!
Re Tainted Love- took a while to find out it was a cover. Used to think the Soft Cell version was miles better- esp since Gloria killed Marc Bolan but have recently started to change my mind.
My confession- I only found out last night the Soup Dragon's "I'm Free" was a cover.
