Unfortunately first two posts confirmed my suspicions. Was hoping for something exotic escaped from a local zoo. Was very suprised to see him shoot out in front of the van as I drove on to site though. As the ground shows, not a deal of "grass" in that area!

Yep, Grass Snake. They can bite but rarely do. What they do like do to is either feign death or, if picked up, squirt out a truely foul smelling substance. It's been a bit hot for them these last couple of days.
