There's no theme, it just says they are looking for "technical and artistic excellence and impact".

So.. what do you lot think that actually means? Perhaps with examples?

How about a runner overtaking a cyclist. Think of the emotion you could capture on each face.

It means what you want it to mean, it is art after all. I guess it means any photo you can't take in Auto and the artistic element refers to composition.

Hmm, so you think I should deliberately mess with the exposure just so I can just call it 'technical'?

Yep, then you just need to capture a beautifully composed photo with a certain level of impact, you know a WOW! factor. It'll be a doddle.

I have trouble with this. I have ideas for pictures, and I know what looks good to me and will be meaningful, but I bet no-one else would rate them technically or artistically!

I'm kind of surprised that someone could cut a cow in half throw it in a couple of tanks of formaldehyde and sell it for a fortune, so I can't really advise you on what is good or bad.
It's not like that Picasso bloke could do a decent portrait either (he actually can but that's not my point).
Be confident and go for it, what have you got to lose?

I just took it lunch time today on the iPhone of joy, was going to Facebook it, but the bread knife wouldn't hear of it, got quite irate at the suggestion, said i was disgusting..

But it's the sort of thing that gets noticed at those photo comps, art farty with a touch of humour..

Might be cos you're quite technically inept, Del Boy. 😐

Mol; just be aware that some pro or amateur what's bin doing it for thousands of years will enter and win, cos they'll need the ego boost. Bit like how some racers enter categories way below their actual ability, just so's they can 'win'....

I took this on an old Olympus compact - not a competition winner, I know, but I kinda like it....

You don't need the [img] thing with flickr.
Click on "share" then click on "BBCode" then simply cut and paste the code. It is a while since I've used flickr becaus einspite of the hosting page is nice and easy, everything else associated with them is shite.

looks good to me TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsSTR

& the beach shot is a winner too

Maybe molgrips should let us know where the comp. is & STW can flood it with entries 😉

technical excellence - the shot has been "assembled" and arranged well - good exposure, good lighting, focussed where it should be focused, appropriate depth of field, focal point of photo sensibly positioned etc etc.

artist excellence - good choice of subject, possible subtle messaging, possibly beautiful aesthetic overall outcome, attention to detail in direction and angle of shot to make most of the subject matter. A photo that makes one think or look again before moving on.

This is why they are looking for technical excellence because it's relatively easy to take a beautiful photograph without necessarily having any photgraphical skill.
