My mum, aunt, brother, and cousin have all had thyroid problems, and I have begun to wonder recently if I am not 'suffering' from hypothyroidism. I say 'suffering' because it's not like I am incapacitated by symptoms; there are, however, a number of things I have been experiencing that I would describe as 'out of the ordinary', including:
1. static weight in spite of running a calorie deficit every day for weeks
2. general fatigue
3. increased sensitivity to cold
and a few other minor things.
The thing is, I am also on sertraline for depression, and I imagine that any number of my symptoms could be attributed to other things.
At what point should one go to the GP? Is testing for hypothyroidism just a single blood test?
Anyone on here have thyroid issues who could cast some light on what any of the symptoms actually feel like?
Yep, will send a PM bit later on.
What kind of calorie deficit? As I've discovered over the years, for some people it's rather difficult to find the line between dieting and fuelling for exercise, and bodies have feedback mechanisms to try and stop them losing weight. It sounds to me like you might not be eating enough and all those symptoms are your body's response to calorie restriction. I've definitely had that before when restricting calories too much.
I have seen you gain and lose weight by riding or not riding, so I suspect that you don't have a metabolic problem.
Hi SR. yes, simple blood test and they can tell. I found out about having it about 8 years ago (im 44 now), simple blood test identified it. had a cholersterol test at work and they said it was high and to see your GP. turns out cholesterol was okay but hypothyroidism was the cause. on Thyroxine to replace whats missing. tablet first thing in the morning and thats it, not a big deal.
as for symptoms, unable to lose weight, knackered all the time and bad moods/feeling fed up. didnt have the sensitivity to cold thing but i guess you wont get all the symptoms.
get the test done, if nothing else it will put your mind at rest
Have you still got a full head of hair and eyebrows
Its only a tablet day and blood tests once a while to check levels.
When mine was (or gets) low I'd often get a hoarse voice.
As the above....I still have bad symptons despite the medication which I don't think does anything. As for temperature, I have about a 1.5C window where I'm ok, 90% of the time I'm way too hot then the rest freezing cold. Permanently tired and weight gain despite exercise etc. Been like it for years, had other tests, iron etc but they say nothing wrong and get fobbed off so just accept it as how it is and things won't improve. Get the blood test as could just be side effects of your other med though
I'm borderline hypothyrroid. However, due to the number of symptoms I had I recently badgered my GP and that through up the fact that I'm suffering with depression, anxiety and loneliness!
Fortunately, I'm now on Sertraline and that's making a big difference. Due to not drinking while on the antidepressants the weight I've been packing on is starting to drop off and I've rediscovered my mojo for riding. Still need to keep going for regular blood tests to check my levels for hypothyroidism though.
