So I have a W-reg Caravelle of which I am the second owner, and which I have driven for the last 5.5 years.

It has quite a few miles on the clock (something like 190000), and has carried my family and I, plus all our camping gear across Europe - from Spain to Poland - over the years.

It has its quirks, including fussy electrics on the dash, coolant that needs to be topped up every few months, not-very-visible, but quite significant rust on the passenger-side B-pillar, and a large dent in the tailgate caused when I backed into a tree.

So, all-in-all, it is a van that will give some family, or surfer, or mountainbiker some pleasure for a while to come, but not in impeccable shape.

Would such a vehicle pose any interest to a sporty-type person? Or is it even worth selling at this point?

Please note that I am only thinking of selling at this point, so am just asking whether or not the collected wisdom of STW thinks it would get me anything and/or if it is still worth keeping on the road.

is it the 2.4? they'll run and run as long as you keep them topped up.

if so i'd say it was definatley worth keeping on the road. tart up the rust a bit (do a half decent job) and don't worry about the dent.

If it's the smaller engine it won't last as long, but still will be worth something. have a look here http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/

🙂

I should have mentioned that it's the 2.5 Tdi.

Oh, and thanks for the link.

definately worth keeping on the road then imo. the bigger engines are very reliable. this thread is worth a look. 🙂

I am glad you think it is worth keeping on the road, thomthumb. I will consider selling to be a higher liklihood.

The thing is, I can't really keep it, as I have lots of kids, and am actually hoping to buy a small minibus that I can convert into a half-camper/half-seating kind of thing. See, I don't drive anywhere in the city so it's only used for long camping/road trips.

It's a VW van with windows. Therefore someone will buy it, probably for more cash than you expect.

I'd fix the rust, put some shiney paint on, lower it & add alloys.
But I'm not allowed to buy any more bikes let alone cars or vans ;-(

I'm sure you could sell it no problems. The local kite/windsurfing spot looks like some sort of VW love-in most afternoons. Judging by the ones parked up for sale, asking price for a ropey old shed with visible rust on the sills, scrapyard alloys and interstellar mileage is easily upwards of £2500.

I'd be interested in it if I had any money.

But pics are always nice to see anyway. 🙂

What's the coolant leak from?

The dealer service people wrote down where the leak was from. I'll have to chekc when I get home. It was an expensive part, though, so I decided to live with the leak.

Pics, too. I have plenty of those, and will post simply because I like them...

I have same model and same year, properly excellent bike van, with extra seats if you want them, taxed and insured as a car, charged as a car on severn bridge crossing and (at least round our way) a great vehicle for multiple no-fee tips to the dump.

A friend used to work at a VW garage, they had a regular customer who had an 88bhp 2.5TDi van with half a million miles on it!
