Thinking about my strategy for the upcoming Aviemore Tri and I think I may need more water/energy than I can fit in the single bottle on my XC bike. I'm thinking of a hydration pack because I'm a long term user and they don't bother me in the least. However the packs I have aren't stable enough to run in.

There's a dhb Aeron on offer at Wiggle that suggests it's for running, has anyone biked in one as well? I can't see there would be a problem but I'd be interested in people's experiences.

I have an Ultimate Direction vest that holds a decent bladder. Obviously stable as it's made for running. Loads of folk doing FKTs on long distance bikepacking routes are using similar models from Salomon etc. Huw Oliver uses a Montane Via. I reckon I'd find them a bit sweaty for a long distance trip but would obviously be fine for a Tri. You could borrow mine for the day if you wanted to "tri" it out.

I've got the Salomon Active skin 8 which is great for running, haven't used much on the bike but seems fine. Prefer it to a hip pack as it doesn't restrict breathing so much.
8L might be bigger than you need but they do a few different size options.
Comes with two 500ml soft bottles and can fit a 2l bladder, so has a good amount of water storage.
Plan to use mine fatbiking this winter too, a good way of keeping water warm next to the body!

Can work well under a jacket too.

Thanks Scotroutes. I may want one for a couple of recce runs before. I appreciate it's not much for some people but this is a big effort for me and I need to be prepared 🙂

That looks a similar design to the dhb one, whereas most running ones seem to be high up on the shoulders.

Yes, seen a few people recommending, particularly for winter ultras, etc. Will be trying the Fat Viking in Norway again in January, last year even with insulated bottle sleeves and Thermos flasks it was a pain to keep water warm enough!

Is that the dhb vest rather than pack?

And why doesn't Wiggle seem to have a mobile-friendly site??

Well the pictures are all of people running and walking with it, but it's less vest-like than some of the others.

Camelback chase might be worth a look.

I use a Camelbak for MTBing but when I tried one for running I couldn't stand the sound of the water sloshing around with every stride. Are there bladders out there with baffles or something that can stop that?

You need to turn the bladder upside down. Suck out all of the excess air.

Sloshing noise gone.

Don't know about turning it upside down, but the sloshing noise is definitely due to the air at the top of the bladder. Get rid of that and it'll be quiet.

Decathlon have some nice looking 10l trail running backpacks, I was eyeing one up just yesterday. They come with a bladder although they also have front pockets you could use for 500ml softflasks. I wouldn't want to wear one on a road bike, but on an MTB they should be fine. They come with 3 straps on the front (you can easily remove them if necessary) so adjustment isn't going to be a problem.

You need to turn it upside down as the hose enters the bladder at the bottom 🙂

I had the CRC app for a while. It cost me a lot of money 😅
