I was out windsurfing today and had the biggest catapult. Feet were wedged in straps and I was hooked in and I twisted really badly as I hit the water. I struggled to get my breath for a good few minutes and I've now got really sore ribs and I keep feeling a strange popping/clicking sensation every so often. I didn't hit my ribs though I was just stretched and twisted with force as the sail went downwind.

I was wondering whether it could be just the muscles between the ribs having been torn?

Quite likely, from memory the medical treatment is the same though as for broken\cracked ribs, i.e. None, just suffer for 6-8 weeks, try not to cough and avoid humorous people 🙂

I had a very similar mechanism of injury in a skiing accident - completely slammed myself chest down on to poles and skis after taking a drop that was too big. Shock to start with, then I was in agony for about a fortnight, it got gradually better then gone in a month. I was convinced I had broken ribs at first but it was soft tissue damage and bruising. It is no joke though, couldn't sleep, move or laugh without misery

Loads of ibruprofen and whisky helped

As above, broken ribs, cracked ribs and torn intercostal muscle tears are all the same. Suck it up. Don't sneeze, don't laugh, do take regular deep breaths to avoid stale air in the bottom of the lungs.

Same injury as Vader except I hit some idiots standing in the middle of a red just over a blind brow and went down on my ski bindings on my side.
Absolute agony - got checked out at A&E and told nothing was broken, just soft tissue/ligaments. Felt like things were moving around. No treatment except ibuprofen and then co-codamol.

Even tearing the facia (the membranes between ribs) is as painful. So long as you can breath (take co-codamol) you'll be fine.

Broke mine 3 times in last 8 years.

First time was chasing the kids round a swimming pool with water guns, on the last day of holiday, except we weren't going home due to the Icelandic Volcano. Treated with alcohol for an extra week - couldn't sleep lying down.

Next two were knocked off bike. The last one came with a broken spine and 4 ribs - the hospital weren't bothered about the ribs, but every time they spasmed, it caused my back to go too - my god I wanted to die, until they prescribed diazepam on top of shed loads of morphine.

I thought I had broken my ribs (again) 2 weeks ago, but my GP disagreed with me this week when I finally admitted defeat and went to get checked.

Absolutely gutted I could not get out windsurfing today, but I was struggling to walk (slowly) until the painkillers kicked in 🙁

Blue sky and wind is such a rare event on a weekend 🙁

last time I cracked mine only advice family member that is a Doc' gave me was to avoid people with colds and coughs - use hand cleanser and wipes - as well as being painful means lungs don't clear out properly and risk serious infection or something like that (kids slide at waterpark)

Yep, been there more than once. Most recent one was a big off on Mile 8 Black DH in Les Arcs. Spent the rest of the week pootling down the greens as could barely walk. Sleeping comfortably is the worst bit I think. Only time will sort it.

I smashed up my side cracking a couple of ribs and generally straining bits at the RedBull Skyride in Tarifa*.
Worse pain in more situations than any breaks or fractures because at least you can immobilise them.
Absolute worst was six cracked ribs each side and my Sternum cracked in a couple of places due to my beloved Escort Mexico's steering wheel jumping for my chest as the engine came back into the passenger compartment at 30mph.
Ribs are bastards.

* Full disclosure: The incident occurred on the way home at Malaga airport when I was dicking around on a baggage trolley.

Cheers all. Had a feeling that unless I had punctured an internal organ it was a case of pain killers and just get on with it. As to sleeping last night 🙁

Ps - up until I had the off it was cross off jumping heaven at Kimmeridge. Sun shining and windy. Perfect!

What cross off jumping? That's full on down the line riding. Lucky to be out at Kimmeridge were the ledges working it should have been really good there. Out at Camber with a jump fest here and am completely beaten up. Get better soon.

You broke almost every rule of skiing and call them idiots. I hope the poor people you hit weren't hurt you selfish ****.

Too fast, blind, out of control and the downhill skier always has priority always, whether stationary of moving. If you can't avoid a stionary object you're a seriously lousy skier. The colour of the piste is irrelevant, it's just a piste.
