Are they to Eurocentric? Taken from an approved list.

Could the same then be said for cyclones and typhoons in the different parts of Asia? Or do they just reflect  the cultural groups in an area and are appropriate?

We don’t get hurricanes in Europe, we get storms.

I now how they name them and were they occur, I was asking for opinions  on the choice names. A subjective kind of debate.

Hurricanes are Tropical Cyclones

In Western Europe we get Extra-Tropical Cyclones

@bsims - why debate them? Do you really care about the merits of Damrey, Ivan or Morakot?

Yeah , on the moon thread, mwsmith linked wiki with a suggestion for me. On that page was the 1988 hurricane season, which got me thinking about names. I wondered what other people thought. I joined this forum to discuss not to troll, like I seem to be getting a rep for. I really want to know what people’s views are.

If. You want to start a discussion have some views first. If other people are bothered or interested then they will reply. Its an organic thing you can't force it

I thought the left leaning stw gang would be all over this.

I can see why original lists would contain Anglo /Latino names given north americas early make up and political landscape, but given its cultural diversity in the 21st century why not come up with a new more to inclusive list of names to reflect this.

The cyclones are named in each region. The North west Pacific basin ones have local names e.g. Odoy, Ketsana

The South west Pacific have local names, e.g. Yari, Debbie, Larry

The Atlantic ones may have had more traditional Anglo-Saxon names in the past but are much more diverse nowadays.

@bsims - what kind of diversity do you want to see?

I was thinking that as Atlantic hurricanes affect the US, a more inclusive list of names which reflects the groups living in the US now. Also some Native American names.

"Hurricanes do travel around, good idea"

"….and leave vast swathes of destruction in their wake."

In that case the usage of Anglo-Saxon names is apposite given the destruction left behind by the British Empire. Coincidentally many of the areas affected by tropical cyclones were in the Empire......

Hurriyet newspapers from Turkey could sponsor the warning system, and get first call on reporting the disasters.

I read the link and originally all storms had women's names, similarly to sailors naming ships after women, but now they share it between men and women.

I thought it was because when the come they're wet, wild and noisy, and when they leave you they also take half your house.

They always give them nice names which is horribly misleading and probably accounts for 98% of hurricane related deaths. “Run everybody, Bettie is coming” just doesn’t sound ominous enough. I’d suggest the following names:

Bastard

****

Judas

Hitler

Himmler

Destructo

Smasher

…but just enough to tell us about it!

The OP was really insistent that he wanted to know. I wouldn't have bothered usually, but he seemed upset that people weren't telling him.

Edit. Oh, you are the OP. You really seemed disappointed that people weren't telling you what they thought. I expected you would be happy to hear that I don't care.
