Trying to plan a multi-day gravel route from Hull to Holmrook as a memorial ride to my Dad who died of Leukemia last year. In his younger days he used to travel on his Lambretta scooter from where he grew up in Hull to work at Winscale staying at Greengarth close to Holmrook just north of Ravenglass. Thought it would be a good challenege and worthy to raise some money for some of the hospitals / hospice that took care of him.
My idea was to use the pennine bridleway to get north from skipton way but I dont know much of how to connect Hull to the pennine bridleway- is there some routes heading up through beverly then across north of York ? Across the southern dales I should be able to work out as live close by. The second route challenge would be gravel from the end of PB round the howgills, then across north of kendal, down windermere or across through grizedale, up over stephenson ground dunnerdale then ekdale and down to coast ?
Any help to make it an enoyable scenic gravel escapade woudl be greatly appreciated ..its all the H's in Hull to Holmrook !
THanks !
not mega scenic, but mostly traffic free.
TPT from Hull to Leeds or Skipton, then off road through the dales heading towards Sedbergh.
then the other Borrowdale towards Staveley, the Jennride route to Coniston.
then Walna scar, and over Ulpha fell to your destination.
would make a cracking couple or 3 days riding. tough though.
just plotted a rough route.
340 km.
5744 meters of climbing.
first 130km is flat.
The Dales Divide route passes through York, and it looks like you should be able to hop up to there via Beverley, then a cycle route to Market Weighton and small lanes from there. Following that would get you into the Dales at Pateley Bridge, then onwards to pick up the Pennine Bridleway at Settle.
I'd follow that as far as Dentdale, then go as described by Ton to Staveley. There is a 'Ravenglass to Ravenscar' C2C off road route which you could follow in reverse from there - I would go via the ferry at Bowness, over Claife to Hawkshead, up through Grizedale to Coniston, down to Torver, up through Broughton Forest, Seathwaite, then either over Ulpha Fell or the Birker Fell road to pick up the Esk Trail.

EDIT: on a gravel bike, the only things I'd probably miss out would be the drop to Seathwaite, which is pretty rocky. You can swap in a road descent without losing too much, though.
Having done the TPT a fair bit, it mostly passes the traffic free test, but is a bit convoluted. From Hull across to Selby isn’t bad though, and Selby up to York is a joy.
The Way of the Roses runs from Bridlington to Morecambe and aside from a bit of shuffling around to keep you off the A164 near Brid, it’s excellent, but more road than gravel. The section from York westwards takes in Boroughbridge, Ripon, Studley Royal, Brimham rocks, Pateley Bridge, so plenty of interest.
So you could TPT to York, then WofR either all the way over, or to where it intersects the Pennine Bridleway somewhere around Ingleton to head northwards.
Brilliant - thanks for all the input, will settle down with a large cup and do some planning on the above suggestions - cheers
I have tried to follow your great advice and have created a route in Strava - hopefully the image below shows it. Could be a bit of a monster at 251 miles and 22,000 ft ......does it look about right tho ?
