Not for me - but my brother!

He is wondering where to move to - he is waaaay more of an urbanite than me, so wants some decent facilities for his metrosexual life (like gyms, cinemas... stuff like that). Oh aye - he is tetotal so pubs don't bother him, though I may need some decent ones should I go to visit!

Pointers on where to avoid would help.

And he doesn't have a car - so needs to be on public transport routes into the town!

Cheers

My mate lives near Holmfirth, which is very beautiful.

Holmfirth ain't 'urban' though!

Leeds or Manchester are half an hour away on the train. Huddersfield is ok - got everything that Leeds or Manc has on a smaller scale. Good boozers and curry houses!

I grew up in holmfirth. beautiful, but far from urban.

Huddersfield is alright, plenty of new developments as well, so potential for a nice place to live close to centre of town. Curry and pubs are good, as well as some good theatre stuff (lawrence Batley theatre shows some good stuff, or it did 10 years ago...) and leeds is only a 30 minute train ride away.

If he's really into city life, I'd recommed Leeds - so much going on yet not as sprawled as Manchester. big music scene, big theatre scene, big clubscene.

I'll be staying in brighton though. it's warmer.

There's a cake shop in Holmfirth. And a folk festival. How urban do you want?

He lived down Brighton way for a bit - my eldest brother bought a house there when they were cheap... bastard! Made a mint when he sold it, though that has now all been spent on studying in LA.

My mates in Leeds suggest there too, though since he is tetotal he may want to come out with us on the lash and remind us how annoying we were when sobriety returns. This is not good 😉

Theres Halifax (where I live). Urban in the sense that you can go out any night of the week and choose from one of the following:
- have a fight
- get mugged
- have a fight
- get drunk (and then have a fight)
- get a kebab on the way home (and then have a fight)
- have a fight

Halifax is indeed a thing of beauty. The Slummet Line does a fine line in cheap lager and fisticuffs.

Halifax is grim. Slaithwaite and Marsden are the places to be. No pylons either. Loads over Halifax side.

if he's a confirmed urbanite metrosexual, Leeds or Manchester, but it's a fair commute

I've lived in Huddersfield, in Mount (inside the M62 from Outlane), Crossland Moor and Moldgreen. I also looked at buying a house in Linthwaite, Slaithwaite or Marsden (but ended up buying on other side of hills). I haven't lived in Hudds for 10 years, though I visit fairly often, so the following may be a bit out of date.

I haven't lived there but I reckon the nicest place to live is probably next to Greenhead park, lots of big old townhouses to choose from, park, town and railway station on the doorstep. The majority of Huddersfield's urban culture is ale-based. It does have an art gallery and theatre, but I don't know how long that would hold your brother's interest for. There is one Multiplex cinema near the football stadium, as far as I know. There is possibly more of a cultural scene (theatre, galleries etc) in Holmfirth or Hebden Bridge.

It's not comparable to Leeds or Manchester, where I've also lived for many years.
