Any chaps on here rooted their htc and put on a custom rom? Seems a lot to choose from, looking for any recommendation etc.
tia
I have, used Open Desire.
Pretty easy to do if you like that kind of thing, Unrevoked is a nice rooting tool.
Leedroid is good.
Thanks chaps. Would you go back to the stock rom, or would you always go with a custom rom? i.e. do the advantages make it worthwhile?
I didn't like the stock htc rom (sense etc) - prefer dialler, contacts and various other things in roms closer to the vanilla android experience.
what advantages do such 'things' as OpenDroid bring?
Got a custom ROM'd HTC Hero over here.
@ iDave : They bring features not available in the stock ROMs to your handset. For example, I was runing Android v2.1 long before it came out as a stock ROM upgrade. Now running v2.2 - which will never be officially released as a ROM from HTC/Orange.
Tethering was another featured enabled by default, as some carriers really don't like you doing that... so they disabled it in their stock roms.
I use a cyanogen rom, it doesn't have the annoying sense stuff over the top, which i prefer. I think the major advantage with custom roms is that you don't have to wait ages when new stuff comes out for htc to release there update!
I rooted mine and did like the increased control you had over things, plus it was great to get rid of the branded Orange apps & restrictions (no tethering etc).
I've actually gone back to the stock (not Orange branded) 2.1 Froyo though as I actually quite like the HTC Sense stuff.
2.2 is available on HTCs though?
yeah but you had to wait ages for it, not if you rooted. Plus it means you can get rid of all the bloatware as already said.
I found Leedroid quicker than stock, I enjoyed the flashing/rooting as I like that sort of thing. I am now back using stock 2.2 and I don't really miss anything.
Leedroid has Sense included if you would like to run a custom rom but you also like Sense, as do a few others.
xdadevelopers forum is the source of all knowledge.
Not being funny but what is the point of all of this? What will a normal phone user gain from doing this?
I'd like to ditch the orange junkware and just get to plain 2.2. How is that done?

Flash the stock RUU. All info here, but there is a lot to digest!
cheers Rich. I may be some time...
nope, I can't get my head round this. oh well, just have to live with low memory warnings...
Be careful m8, its quite easy to mess up an android phone and once you do if you don't know your s**t you can forget fixing it. Also, the second you root it to allow the flashing of cooked roms its ta ta warranty.
Apart from you can reflash a stock rom to return it to stock for warranty purposes, which I have done.
If you can't get the phone to turn on to flash it, then there is a good chance it won't be noticed that the phone is rooted.
But as ever, we do these things at our own risk.
I'm running Cyanogen Mod 6.1 - and whilst there are one or two small things I miss about sense, the benefits faaaaar outweigh the negatives!
I found Sense slowed down the general phone experience too much, with cyanogen (and launcher pro) everything runs slick :]
I returned my phone under warranty after a re-flash to stock ROM, downloaded from HTC's website.
As soon as I got it back, re-rooted, and re-flashed to VillainROM's latest for the Hero.
Hmm interesting, though I have read nothing on here that would make me want to root my Desire. After my T-mob one got dropped in a pint (which it pretty much survived) I maanged to get it replaced under my phone insurance so just have an unbranded one without the T Mobile gubbins.
