Subbying to a company infusing 80mm.+ grp laminate. Trimming involves a large electric grinder (no automatic brake)and a round a 230mm.(maybe larger) unguarded diamond coated blade. The trimming is done at about gut height with the blade in the horizontal position.
I hate to think what would happen should the blade ever find a dry spot!
It certainly seems dangerous to me. Is it this operation legal?

Has a proper hazid and risk assessment been performed?

From what you have described it doesn't seem so.

The hazid should of picked up on the possibility of a "dry spot" and the risk assessment should of identified actions to remove or reduce the risk, like fitting a guard or using a different technique.

Put down the grinder and walk away!

No way I'd be going anywhere near a 205mm grinder without a guard, much less horizontally at waist height.

As someone who works with GRPs of various types daily, my definite preference is cutting actions which don't produce so much dust/particles - could you consider using a guillotine or shears rather than the grinder, or better yet, cutting to length under more controlled conditions?

If you're subbing to another it is your responsibility to make sure you have the risk assessment in place and any control measures, that's why they subbed it out. The company giving you the work should be checking that your assessment is suitable and sufficient as they will also feel the wrath of the HSE if it goes wrong.

Look on it as a costing learning point if you haven't allowed for tool/ppe/other controls hire to make the job safe.
