My googlefu is failing me, I want a simple ANT+ HRM chest strap jobbie, but I simply don't want to faff with coin cells, ideally just plug it into a USB cable (phone charger/PC) and have it good to go in a couple of hours... Shouldn't cost the earth either...
What have I missed?
You missed that a good quality ant + sensor unit such as a garmin withstands at least a year of heavy use - if not more using so called council cells.
Chesp ebay ant + sensors probably not so much.

Got a Scosche Rythm+ arm band one that's rechargeable but needs a charge after 10 hours or so use. A Garmin chest strap on the other hand seems to need changing once every year or two.
As above, Garmin chest strap batteries last years of fairly heavy use.
I changed my Garmin HRM strap battery recently, it was at least 3 years old and averaging around 25 hours use per month.
Nope saw that, and the claimed battery life sounds good, but I would rather have a device that allows me to recharge it...
Last HRM I had (was admittedly a cheap, BT smart one) randomly ran out of juice, and seemed to eat cells so I am a little suspicious of them...
I just don't see why I can't buy a version of the same device that is rechargeable like just about everything else you can buy these days... Clearly I am odd.
Got a Scosche Rythm+ too, best hrm strap in my opinion. I always felt I needed the 1% of puff wearing a chest strap used to rob me of.

Cheers jambo, but I'm after a HRM not an activity tracker and I can have a new Rhythm+ for a tenner more than you want for your fuse...
just for the other side I have a Rythm+ but avoid it for anything other than long steady rides. It struggles with very bumpy stuff and can't cope at all with intervals where it loses track as soon as you accelerate. Went back to Garmin strap and it just worksGot a Scosche Rythm+ too, best hrm strap in my opinion.
Why not just get a Garmin strap if it is compatible with the normal battery that last yonks and yonks

I've never changed a battery in a Garmin HRM strap. Had two now for all over 5 years.
Not a heavy user but the dammed things just refuse to die...

Mine works fine, perhaps yours has a connection issue with your phone.
My Garmin HRM straps seem to wear out before the battery does. Garmin are great at sending out warranty replacements though.
