After 2 1/2 months of virtually no rain, we've had quite a bit in the past few weeks but many areas of our lawn are still brown and not growing. Our neighbour's lawn looks similar despite them being retired and spend the whole summer gardening. Will it grow back eventually or am I going to have to seed it all?

It is very hard to kill grass, it will grow back.

Remarkedly well considering no rain for months, then 1-2 days solid rain and now the morning dew is keeping it going. Much more has come back to life than I expected after a single rainfall two weeks ago....

Mine looks as good as new.  Even the bits that had no signs whatsoever of green grass have recovered.

You can kill grass easily in my lawn.  Usually winter does it, too much rain and clay soil.

Anyway - it is growing back now though - the root systems are still alive under the brown stuff which are producing fresh little grass shoots.  Because the fine new shoots have replaced the straggly thatchy mess that was there before, the new lawn is much improved.

Same as yours, brown patches all over the place with no sign of growth, but I'm optimistic it will come back.

What has really surprised me is how well the dandelions have recovered. All summer there's been no sign of a single one, then a week or so after the rain started the lawn is covered in massive lettuce sized dandelion leaves. I was out there with the weedol last night which IME is 100pc effective.

I'd love to know why an endless dry spell followed by heavy rain was very good for dandelions.

Needs a mow. Very green and lush, but then it's in the shade for much of the time.

Almost back to normal, apart from the areas where our daughter's garden toys now reside!

Some of the plants in the garden have taken a bit of a hit, but the weeds are doing remarkably well; I'm quite proud of just how many weed thrive in our garden!

Our verge is now 90% dandelion, 1% thistle, then grass with a bit of black medic thrown in.

The shady bit looks pretty good but the rest consists of a brown dry mass and a few clumps of green stuff. Like Stumpy01's garden the weeds seem to be thriving.

[edit]

That's on no watering other than what's fallen from the sky which is not much.

Very green 5 days ago (photo) and for the month or two before that was a yellow and brown mess.  Always seems to recover.

Just look at that lushness

Mine's lovely. Even got a compliment from neighbour Doreen!

Very Proud as her flower beds are a delight! 🙂

Ours is very patchy.

Ironically the shaded, mossy end came through the dry spell pretty unscathed whereas the other end took a battering.

Back lawn is lovey - but it's only small and I did water it occasionally, and fed it. Front lawn went completely yellow, but has started to pick up. Some patches too. As it's rained, I fed the lawn as well, so it's picking up well.

Mine's looking the same shade of green that it did all through the heatwave. It does help that it's made of plastic though 🙂

99% recovered back to it's neglected, child trodden 'best'. Gardener came yesterday and striped it up for us, the very top that gets the most sun is still a bit brown, looks like a comb over now.

Ours was new at the start of the summer after the builders trashed the last one (which was a bit of a mess admittedly).

If got loads of water at the start of the summer to bed in the new turf, but had been looking a bit patchy before we went away. CCTV shows it's turned back to luscious green again, and needs a cut...

Our grass hasn't seen any significant water since the sping. It's not even brown anymore it's almost white. There is literally no green anywhere to be seen. Hopefully it'll grow back as we have sold our house and I'm sure the new owner isn't going to be happy to have the Sahara as a garden when he moves in at the beginning of November!

Was looking very brown, then a week of warm rain while I was away and boom! I’ve mowed it twice this week already! Back to lush green with a couple of small patches of brown where I weedkillered just before the dry spell. I think I’ll ned to mow again at the weekend!

The worst lawn I’ve ever seen and when I poured water from a cup on to the grass, the soil just came and washed along down.

I’m going to save up and brick pave the whole area next year.

Mines looking great. Started to struggle, but splash over from the kids paddling pool seems to have given it a life line over the dry period.

Its gone somewhat verdant with the recent rain. Density is getting to the point that people have started to comment it's soft underfoot. Now to win against the remaining dandelions that are hanging on here and there and my monoculture will be complete!

Ha!

Ours is pretty bloody patchy but part of that seems to that the moss is struggling

Been out with a rake earlier this afty just to (hopefully) finish it off

As with above mine was looking pretty poorly when we went away on 4th August. Woke up to it 20th and it looks amazing. Couple of weeds to zap or dog out but long lush greeness. Best course of action is to ignor and go out of country for a Fortnight.

Grass is incredibly hardy, it may look knackered up top but underneath it's waiting to launch an attack of new shoots.

There's little point in watering during prolonged hot spells; it'll recover naturally when the rain returns.

Mines patchy in the back and dead at the front .

However after using the weed free patio sand at great cost from b&q I van report that the patio is alive with greenery

gert lush, apart from a couple of patches over drainage.  A mow fills a brown bin, but collection is only every 2 weeks.

Leave it shaggy or drive to the tip?  Don't know how large a compost bin/patch we'd need, and it would eat into the pump track project area.

Mine is a mess, about half of it has come back since the rain but the other half looks terrible. I blame the kids and dogs

Going to put feed on today and then apply some seed to the patches in readiness for the rain on Saturday.

From my perspective the lawn is fantastic.... little magnet and hands and knees and I've found so many dropped screws and stuff... 😀
